OK before you read all the posts below read this...

I have cleaned up all the posts and the first post of mine will be updated all the time. which is this one.

Here is the start.

The Frame

I have changed the material design slightly after talking with an Profesional tank builder.
I am now going to make the tank with Plywood and a metal frame.
The frame will be made out of Right angel steel. He said that the pressre at the bottom of the tank will around 1.7bar . So the amount of 10x10 wooden struts would make the frame very large.

So i have decided that i am now going to weld the frame from right angle steel. The plywood will be housed on the inside of the frame.

The frame will be made with 4cmx4cm right angel steel. this now also means I have a larger area for the filter system to be housed.
for the looks i will bolt on 6cm wood to the out side. this will still give the wooden strut effect in the following picture.

here is the metal frame.

Here is what it should look like with the wooden struts attached.

The cement struts in the centre will no longer be there due to it now being made from metal.

The Filter system

Next I had to plan and design for the filter. I have been given two 60L barrels from work which I have tested under pressure. The 1st will be for the filter material except for the bio ceramic tubes.
The second will hold bio ceramic tubes. The pump will pull the cleaned water from second barrel which will cause an inward pressure. The fist and second containers will be linked together. Pump sucking from Barrel 2 barrel 2 sucking from barrel 1.

Here is a diagram of what i am doing with the Filer system.

any flaws please tell me please.

I have placed the pump after the filters as this will cause suction to the lids instead of before the filters which will cause outword pressure to the lids.

Below you will see in grey the pipes that will suck the water into the filter system. This will be a half under gravel filter and half general water filter.
As you can see the Filter is split into two halves left and right. From the first barrel i will have a Y connector splitting the suction from left to right.
Also the pressure of the tank will also push water into the filter.
all the pipes will have lots of small holes drilled into it . the end of the pipe will have caps in it making sure the water will flow through the holes

The pump will push the water through the red pipes in the picture below. the outlet pipes are going to be siliconed inbetween the corners of the ledges that im going to make at this level. These pipes will also have holes drilled into them but all in different directions so giving a slow moving and disturbed water platern all around the tank. if i have the money when this comes around you can buy little jets that can be stuck into the pipe this will cause a spray effect and not a jet effect making the water more general moving and not a directional turbulant moving flow of water.

Inline Heating system

Ok here is the inline heater system i am building.

This inline heating system will house 4 x 300w heaters, one in each corner. approximatly 4000 -4600L will flow through this per hour.
heater1.jpg

At the moment it is missing two corners (forgot to buy them). but as you can see in each corner on the left the 300w heater will be installed.

The water will flow in the from left to right in this picture.

Here is a closer look at the heater unit

heater2.jpg

the black connector in the centre will connect into a 19mm pipe

I have now received 2 x 60 L barrels which i will change into the filter tanks. I have them in a pressure test at the moment
tank1.jpg

what i have done was to buy an end cap the same size as the pipeing.

The pipe is normanl kitchen water pipe. I placed a peice of this in the tank for a week to see if there was any reaction.

so what i did was to drill a hole the same size the glass then pass the heater through the hole. because there is a good 2-3cm of space on the inside of the cap. which i am going to fill with wet aquarium silicon. then im going to leave it upside down for a day.

every joint of the plastic is joined together with PVC Pond sealant. (watch out for this as it says it sets in 12hrs....) balls it does ...It set in 30 seconds for me.

once i get all the thing totally built. im going to go all around all the joints and place more PVC glue around it so it totaly seals the thing.

Model of tank

I have made a model of the tank to see if the messurments are good.

here are the first pictures of what the larger thing will look like

great, keep us posted. don't forget the pics also. what size did you go for?

ste :)

Damn you got some serious ideas man. IM too retarded to try and build a tank of my own.

Here here....
I'm in the same boat...

Tis gonna look fantastic though :D

Any room left on that boat??? i really need to get on!!!

Fozz, looking good. So far, I only can see one potential drawback.

Your bio balls or other media is going to have a rough go at getting enough oxygen to get a good biological colony going. For that matter, if you are drawing water through an undergravel setup, the biological media would probably prove unecessary.

But, looking good..

Its all looking good so far. If you don't mind would you be able to let us know rough costs as you go along and a final cost.

Good Luck :)

at the moment i an gathering all the material. and searching for the cheapest things around. Hopefully i will have enough stuff to start in march. and be finished in april.
As with fish stuff you cant rush stuff.
I have been given a 3500 liter per hour punp so i'm looking for another one which will be around 1000 - 2000 L/H.

the tank should cycle at least once an hour.

Why the raised up area in the middle? Looks like it's just wasted space, and more joints that could leak. Also the filter in lets at the bottom could be trouble. If you ever spring a leak in your plumbing it will empty the whole tank. If you could mount them higher and have a siphon break close to the waterline it would be much safer. I do like what you've done for inline heating though. I wanted to do something similar myself but wasnt that creative. I have a 100 gallon plywood that I built and it's my pride and joy. I want to build something big though. Something so big I have to go swimming to clean it. B)
Unfortunately I live in an apartment. :S Keep us posted on your progress, I really like to see DIY tank projects. :D

Due to me also living in an apartment i dont have alot of space. so thed space in the centre of the tank is to house all the filteration system. th inlets at the bottom will have taps on them. I am confident enough to seal the tank that i wont get a leak. with every thing here i am going a bit OTT with the whole thing.also the pressure at the bottom of the tank will add in the filter ation system as it will force the water into the filter system instead of the pump doing every thing. im also going to place in a skimmer but i dont know how in going to do it yet.

first the tank then the rest of the filter.

thanks for your points. the more the better. Gives me more Ideas.
