I had a major green and brown algae problem. My live plants were smothered in Algae. Put an Albino BN in my 31 US gallon tank three days ago and the tank is just about clean. Last night I dropped a wafer right beside him because I wanted to make sure he got some real food. He made his way over and started sucking away, I said Bon Appétit and turned the light out. Twenty minutes later I went to check and see how much he ate. The wafer was hardly touched and he was back up on a leaf chowing down on some brown Algae! This morning the wafer was gone but I don't know who ate it.

Anyway the point is... anyone looking for solution to a serious Algae problem need not look any further than a BN (the hardest working fish).

Just know... all that algae ends up being four inch long strings of crap!

Still, much easier to clean up than the Algae! :good:

I think it all depends on the individual fish.
I have had BN in the past that didn't touch the algae in my tank.

how big is ur BN?
Just a baby, under two inches.

I have a small BN about two inches and its the laziest plec in the tank, there is a large peice of bogwood with a hole through it where it stays all day long i cant understand why he/she never comes out, its been about three months but it seems happy enough.

well im looking to get a pleco i want one that will grow big but not too big, and i dont really want a common pleco. the BN's that my local pet store has are still very young. there not even an inch yet.... so i dont think thats going to work. i guess i just have to wait for a good batch to come in.

I must admit that my pair of BN's don't seem to clean the tank either. Maybe they are too well fed?

Honestly, maybe mine just might be a weird one then. My tank is starting to get lean on algae. My BN is very active during the day so today I decided to drop an algae wafer in during feeding time. I gave the community bloodworms and I thought it would be the best way to be assured the rest of the fish would be full and would leave the wafer for the Pleco. The BN didn't touch it. It just kept sucking on the "pretty darn clean" plants. What are ya gonna do?

Tonight I'll drop another wafer when I turn the lights out. I figure if it's hungry it'll find the wafer and eat!

One of my busiest plecs is the Big Sot pleco which i bought from pets at home, its a beautifull fish.
I think night time is good to use pleco wafers or cucumber etc they are always gone by morning the cucumber having a large hole in the centre.

Well I got Algae Grazers! Fish food for all Algae Eaters. HBH makes them. On the back of the package is says HBH is committed to bringin you the best quality yadda yadda yadda. Vitamins and minerals yadda yadda yadda!

Problem is my Pleco wont touch the things. Last night I dropped one in the tank after lights out. Found a mushy untouched wafer this morning! What should I give her? I think she's a she? I'm just about out of Algae for her to eat...

I tried dropping the cucumber in as suggested but it just floated around for an hour. Will it eventually drop to the bottom? It hasn't eaten a thing but algae since it got it. darn BN is stressing me out.

Sinking Shrimp pellets and another type of catfish pellet that is not totally vegeterian, its meant for catfish and loaches. Mine also get algea wafers but only really like one brand (which typically I am now having trouble getting

) I also try to keep a healthy lot of live weed in the tank, all trial and error really as some palnts the BN's eat down to a stump, others they just dismantle (making fine bits of leaf float all through the tank until the filter snags it), while others they seem happy to let grow and just give the leaves a cleaning nibble. They really seem to love eating Elodea which is good because its so fast growing and can easily take over a tank a win win for me, when the elodea gets too wild in one tank I just snip off the acess and plant it in my BN tanks the overgrown tank is spruced up while the Bn's have a lovely lot of new elodea to slowly mow through.

I need a couple plecos like urs I'm starting to have a major algea problem I have to clean it at lease 1 every 2 weeks when I clean it the fish eat some but none to make a difference. Its killing me and my local pet store isn't getting any decent sized plecos. They have little tiny babys then they have the 12 inch ones.

I'll try that for sure. I dropped wafer in last night but I really don't know who's eating them. Tonight I'll drop the shrimp pellets. I don't really see how the BN will get to them before the cory's but it's worth a try. It stresses me out because I've had the pleco over a week and I haven't seen him eat a thing but algae.
