i am going to start breedin veiltail bettas!!!

would you recommend this/has anybody ever bread them ??

why do people say you are not supposed to breed them?????/

I would not reccomend breeding them as they are so common. If you end up with 500+ fry, your LFS will not take all of them and you'll have a hard time selling VTs. You are better off finding a nice pair of crownies and making a bit of money selling them. The only time I'd breed VTs is if I found a black opaque pair, or maybe white opaque. But thats my opinion.

Veils are like dogs you get from the pound. They are cute but you dont' know their background..and shouldn't breed them.

wot would happen if i bread a solid red male VT with one of them blue with a tiny bit of red VT females???

That red coloring found on a blue is called red wash and is HIGHLY undesireable in the betta market, that is a trait that most breeders frown on that when it shows up. You definately do not want to breed a fish that has that characteristic.

If all your LFS have are Veils..then why would you want to breed veils? If a market is saturated with one type product...it's going to be mute for someone to come into that market trying to peddle the same product and make anything with it.

Why do you want to breed anything? To make money?

Personally I don't think any animal, fish, or fowl should be bred for the sole purpose of making money. The main purpose for breeding should be to better whatever specie you decide to breed. And breeding the bottle of the barrel variety (ie Veil) is NOT a way to better the betta specie.

You can go to www.bcbetta.com or www.aquabid.com or do some research on here for breeders close to you....if you are truly serious about breeding bettas..to look for a nice breeder pair. But they are not cheap...Veils are cheap...and they are cheap for a reason.

Good quality Betta's are not cheap, raising fry is not cheap, keeping fish is not cheap.

If you are trying to be cheap in order to skrimp so you can make lots of money... :grr:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO :grr:

I DONT WANT TO MAKE MONEY!!!!
I JUST WANT THE CHALLENGE OFBREEDING THEM!!!!

I WILL GET A SOLID RED VEILTAIL AND BREED IT WITH A WHITE FEMALE!!!!

If you want to breed, breed plakat, halfmoon or crowntail or even cross this three. :D

Ok, lets put it like this. You know how VT's are quite often kept in horrid conditions in pet shops? If you breed VT's no one would buy them if you were to put them up on a website or something cause shipping alone would cost more then the fish itself no matter what the quality of the VT is and you will be stuck with 200-500 bettas to take care of. If you sold them to a pet shop, you would be contributing to the poor treatment of VT's as there is already an excess of them rotting away on the store shelves and no matter how many die, the store almost always still turn a profit cause they bought them for next to nothing to begin with. If you really want to experience the challange of breeding, invest in a good pair so that when you do have spawns you have quality spawns and will be able to find better homes for them easier and quicker thus making room quicker for more spawns. Raising the spawns will cost just as much wether you breed VT's or quality bettas, so why not go for the quality ones?

I would like to ask you to please not breed them.
There are way too many out there that are sick that nobody wants and keep getting passed up on the shelves - and lord knows what happens to them. PLUS, you'll end up with way more than you want or can get rid of. And then what?

Breed something like crowntails which are much more in demand and will mostly likely ALL be wanted. I have 2 pairs of eyeballs (attached to a couple of bettas - heh heh) staring at me right now that I got from WalMart because they were leftover sickies that nobody else wanted. I did also get one that was healthy from the start, but that's just because his coloring was gorgeous and I couldn't pass him up. I also have 8 bettas at home right now. I don't collect them for their beauty or charm, I do however buy them because I feel like for some reason or another no one else will want them.

Thank god (I don't THINK they do, anyway) they don't have any concept of "Nobody wants me".

Here's one such fella (I just picked up today):

Exactly. You might not be in it for the money, but when the lfs won't take them and you can't give them away, the only option left is selling. And you won't sell many VTs, so where are you going to put what could be 500+ babies? Take a look at the photos of Bettamans fish room. Its much better to have a room full of CTs that you can put up for sale and break even with what you spent than have hundreds of unsellable VTs. Thats why I can't breed, I have a lack of space and can't fint CTs locally. Take a looky on Bettamans webbie, he does lovelly bettas..... Maybe one day....

BTW, is it me or is this the biggest rip off ever?

Breeding animals is not suposed to be a CHALLENGE...omg no. Grow some sea monkies if you want a challange...you should not play God with a LIFE just to see if you can. They are fish..they have lives...they are not indespensable inanimate objects. :grr:
