Breeding My Discus

Okay. Thanks!
Also, do you cover your heater? I read that since they have big bodies you should cover the heater to prevent burns. Do you do that?

Yes, I use those ready shielded heaters. If for some reason the Discus become startled they will try to hide, and they can try and get between the heater and the tank glass. However, if I were starting a fresh, I think I would be very tempted by the new style canister filters which have built in heaters. Also it is less clutter in the tank and less wiring.

Okay. I want one of those, but I'm 14 so I don't have a whole lot of money to spend on aquarium supplies. Since I think I'm going to get Discus, I might hold off on a new tank and save money to get a bigger one with nice supplies.

andI would say that if you are going to keep good looking discus healthy they will need a decent set-up. However, you can keep easier fish with the same equipment, so build up the things you want over time and before you know it you will have everything assembled.......while at the same time you were enjoying your original fish

Ya. I have a 15 Gallon now. I might get a new filter, then put the old media in the new filter so that I won't have to spend as much time cycling when I get my new tank. And, that way, I can take my time picking out fish because I won't have to worry about the bacteria dieing from lack of food.

How many Discus do you think I could house in a 50 gallon tank?

I would recommend 6. You could go with a couple more, but it will require more maintenance.

Where do you find your discus at? I have seen in the LFS near my home, but none as pretty and brightly colored as yours. I really thought they were kind of ugly until I saw you lil couple. Now I know how gorgeous they can be

Oh, I am very very lucky. I am originally from the UK, but live in Thailand now, and am friendly with the owner of a local fish farm. When I lived in the UK I would need to drive 3 hours each way to find them, and they were dam expensive, 75 bucks+ each! Here in Thailand I can buy fully grown adults for about 10 bucks, or young fish for a couple of dollars. I also swap a bunch of my young fish for a couple of adults from time to time.

I am heading down the fish farm in a couple of hours(is early morning here now) to see my friend, only trouble is it always ends the same way......I tell myself "NO MORE FISH", but I can't help myself when I see their little faces saying "take me home" . It's like one of those puppy pounds!........Will take some pics if you like?

I've got some other fish/tank pics on here somewhere(guess you search my content or something), you can see the different varieties in those pics. Some nice blue ones, etc.

I noticed that your two breeding discus are of the same strain, but I was wondering if I could get two different strains to mate, or if they just, didn't do that.
