I think you should get in the tank and act as a surrogate.

Now go get working on your slime coat!

I have many an innuendo in my head right now, but this is a family show, and I don't want to get band!

I do think that the only thing left is actually to jump in and join them though

....Menage a trois?!

I was driving down to the coast today with my girlfriend, and constantly racking my brain to see if I have every base covered, and I don't know what else to do. Now it is near midnight here and we are both talking about whether those guys are now tending to a big batch of fresh eggs

. Even my girlfriend has become consumed by it! How can a couple of slimy fish control my life like this?

I don't think there's much more you can do. I admire your determination!
I'm going for cory-spawn and syno petricola spawning... Not merely as hard as discus :D

Although sticking a bucket in my fridge for cooler 'rainwater' for my cory's is not sticking too well with the missus :)
........ Try a pound of live blood worm!

....... Oops, I spread it on the toast by mistake!

Great thread! And you are lucky; we have similar jobs but I don't have anybody looking after my fish as well as you do! Mine are on a automatic feeder when I am away on a mission....

When I lived in Scotland, I had mine on auto everything, and sometimes I was away for 4 weeks at a go and they were always in top condition when I came home. But like now(just 48 hours away) I always wonder and worry a little

That video was fantastic! It was a simple setup once you explained it, but most people don't think those kinds of things up. :good: Now if only everyoen could have fish-ready water!
I am lucky on that respect. It could be done with a water butt, heated and conditioned, and then pump the water on a timer. I have mine running 24 hours, but you could do something similar with a timer, and save water. I am only using about an average bath full per day, so not to wasteful

Just arrived back home, and sure enough the pair in the top tank had spawned
yahoo.gif
Although I suspect they must have eaten some of their eggs, as it is a fairly low number(approx 100). Still, all good. I gave the eggs a wash of formalin to keep fungus away. Then dropped the guard over them...... now I can just sit back and wait for them to hatch tomorrow night.

Ironically the new pair in the bottom tank are cleaning their spawning cone now! I have read that taking water from a tank that has spawn in it and adding it to the water of another pair can trigger them to also spawn. So the fact that the water is flowing from the top tank into the bottom tank may well have spurred those two into getting jiggy

. What is it they say...."It never rains, only pours!"

This was certainly true when I was breeding clownfish - I had 8 tanks connected to a centralised sump.

It was like 'tank dominoes' - one after the other like clockwork.

eww I wonder what fishy pheromones smell like?

It would be great if it does have that effect, just to up the odds a bit. I'll go give it a taste

And Jenson wins!!! Go Jens! ....... OK got that out of the way.

Apart from a good day watching Formula 1. The eggs that my couple laid may be few, but they are super strong, and looking good to hatch in the coming hours. Only half a dozen non-fertile eggs, which is great. You can see in the photo that they are very dark, that is the eyes of the fry.

The pair in the lower tank, have been putting on a show, with the boy wanting to sew his oats and he has been showing the girl his moves. I think his name is Randy, but his girlfriend just tucked herself away behind the pipework, and was not going to give him any action.

I guess she must have a headache, so was going to drop a couple of Aspirin in the tank for her, but went with the old gooseberry fish trick. I dropped another male in, and that seemed to fire them up a bit. Gooseberry didn't seem to fussed about it, and was more interested in stealing their lunch, far more that worrying about their love life!

All the fertile eggs have hatched now, and look really good. Plus the non-fertile eggs are free from any fungus that might have contaminated the others. I think the total loss water system has really helped keep everything super clean.

I just took a wee look at the first page of this(5 months back!!!) and suddenly realised just how long and winding this road has been. What started out(in my mind) as a short blog of my fish laying some eggs, and then some fry swimming around, has turned out to be the Orient (not so) Express! I was reading a book last night, about fish breeding, and it talked about why some fish are so expensive. The main reason we pay a packet for some fish is because the are a right royal pain in the butt to breed. It ain't rocket science, just a bit annoying when they don't play ball. I hope once i have cracked it, beyond hatching fry, I can take it to the next level of selective breeding. I won't bore you all with that, but I am really enjoying the challenge.

I hope you have success this time!!! I'll pray very hard for you!! (Save some prayers for me too! Jack Dempseys on their second spawn and they ate the first!)
