Breeding My Discus

Hey devoted, i am wondering if you could answer a quick question for me about discus, as you seem quite experienced with keeping them?

The last few weeks i have noticed mine shaking their fins (if that sounds right), its like they flutter their top and bottom fin then shoot forward in the tank, at first i thought this was something up with my water, but all the stats check out fine, 0ppm ammonia, 0ppm nitrite, 5ppm nitrate, recently changed to fully planted but the discus were doing this before that.

I do a 20-30% water change at least every other day as i hate poop on my sand, temp is around 28-29oC.

I could sit and wait while recording a video, but quality would be poor as i only have my phone to record with.

Nothing wrong, they are chatting

It is their way of communicating. They often do it when they are trying to get a mate, so is normally the male fish. Actually shows they are very contented

Omg this is brilliant just sat for 2 hours reading through this whole thread watching all the videos right through. JUst brilliant and stunning fish thought it was going to be a big build up and by the time i got to page 20 you would have babies but none the less very impressed and keep up the good work cant wait for more posts to read. :D

Yeah......Sorry about that, it was originally the plan, and it looked like I was so on track, but then it constantly went west. I started to sound like a stuck record, and full of rubbish excuses!

Oh my, has it been hard. I was late home buy a couple of days and the fry already went for a swim......and became lunch again!

So here is the new plan. Last night my friend from the Discus farm came over, and we drank beer, and then fixed every problem in the world! Beer fixes everything........or so I claim! Anyway, we decided my fish are just a randy young pair and they need to mature and grow. So I have separated them to curb their hormones and grow them a bit.

Today I went to the farm and selected a dozen of the nicest mature fish they have, and we put them together in a big old tank at the farm, and we will see what pairs form. I will then take the best pair and have a go with them. I chose some super blue fish, which fingers crossed will get married. All of these fish are fully grown and mature, and my friend is certain they will be good parents. We will wait around 3 weeks to be sure.

I am away on a job to the Solomon Islands next week, for a couple of weeks, so when I get back we should be good to go. I will buy a new breeding tank and make a silk sheet covered love nest. Those fish are going to be so pleased with the love nest I have planned

Another thing to make me jealous!

Not only the most amazing tank and gorgeous fish but also the kind of job that means you get to go'off to the Solomon Islands'!

I had a friend at school who was from there and always wanted to visit!

I will try to get some pics from the reception party...... hopefully there are no fights. The honeymoon sweet will be laced with Champers' and flowers.......... actually I saw a tank I want for my new love nest and it is so nice I'd climb inside myself for some loving, if I was smaller and could breath under water!

I know it. I am lucky to get some good gigs. I'll post some pics from there. I am going to Guadalcanal. I am a big in to fishing too(catch and release only), so will try to get some nice fish pics from the ocean

Scuba mate! - if not for the fish then there are supposed to be some of the best WWII wrecks around there!
