Breeding Jack Dempseys

Well it has been three days since the spawn hatched, and there is one very strong one that is already trying to jump out of the pile. I have high hopes for this spawn as I was compleetely prepared for it. I have back up equipment in case a heater or filter goes out, and live food to help the babies grow.

Great, hope all goes well.

Well, this batch is definitely looking really good. It's day five and they swim stronger and smoother than the last batch. Quick video of them playing around.

They seems to be really good strong fry. Both mommy and daddy are playing a part in keeping the youngins out of trouble. There looks to be about 200 of them, solidly swimming about this little patch of area in the tank. Daddy is being over protective in my opinion. I fed the babies some BBS this morning and daddy Jack attacked the turkey baster and almost took it out of my hand. The funny thing is, the computer that I am on right now is right next to the jack tank, so I look to my left and I see cute little swimmers. Then daddy catches me looking and I have a flaring jack in my face!!

I can imagine lol. Anything you can compare it to? Cutting off a finger, breaking a bone, whacking yourself with a bat etc

He's a beauty indeed...and check out the black mum!; never realised they went that dark. Looking forward to my next bigger tank and a pair of JD's (you are a bad influence, I may have to do this sooner rather than later!!) Fingers crossed for your fry

MOF, if he catches you right, its like someone pinching your skin!!

And thank you JDS4me. I have been trying to get a picture of lady fish for a while, well, at least outside fo her breeding dress. Now that I have surviving fry, it will probably be a while before she tones down.

pack it in...are you trying to bankrupt me?!? seriously though, these are brilliant photo's, just look at that colouration already coming through in those little ones...I am starting to look for a 5-6 footer on ebay right now! What a proud mum you must be :good:

So have you decided to do anything differently this time around? I know your heater let you down last time, but I think the fry were eaten the first time?...will you be splitting the fry/parents apart in the tank...its difficult as they are such good parents?

I could watch these little fellers for hours!

I'm going to let the parents raise the fry. And yes, the first time they bred, they ate the fry, but they had tank mates and we didnt know they were a pair. So we gave them a tank of their own. The second spawn, the heater died. The only intervention I am doing is am I feeding live BBS to the babies, which is kind of an interesting task as the daddy likes to bite my fingers when I go in with the turkey baster. I think the BBS is why they are colered up so nicely and swimming so strongly. I am going to keep them with mommy and daddy as long as I can though, as its neat to watch them be parents.
