Breeding Jack Dempseys

Well, I will try again next time.I am getting some brine shrimp eggs and making a brine shrimp hatchery so I am going to be better prepared next time. :)

Thank you. This is experience 2 of two with breeding an egg laying fish, so I am pretty new at it lol. It will work when its meant too.

I would love to have some JD's but my tank (which is currently in a fishless cycle) is too short (800x420x600). I should have done some more research before I bought but tbh I'm limited to where I can put a tank and the one I have is probably about as long as I could have.

They are pretty neat fish. Very shy as far as cichlids it seems, at least mine are. I see more activity and aggresive behavior when they are breeding, which is one thing that made the experience neat. I would go to the tank to watch the babies and daddy fish (Jack) would come to the glass and flare at me, and mommy fish (Diane) would take the protective stance over the youngins. I also recommend the normal Jacks vs. the electric blues. From what I understand, the normal jacks are hardier. If you ever want a pair, find a good second hand tank! I bought my 75g for 50 bucks.

Hi, just setting up for a JD-only tank, 260 litre

hoping to breed as you are...they are such great characters aren't they? I had one 20 years or so ago, and am looking forward to a return to keeping them. I want the original jacks as to me they are more colourful, but nowhere here seems to be able to order them so will post on here I think. Anyway good luck with the next batch of fry!

Very nice tank. They are very neat fish, and I love mine to death. Hopefully the next batch of fry will work out. Im new to this just as they are new parents lol. Best of luck to you with your setup

I have a pair of JD's that had fry about the same time yours did. I have read your journey, and I felt your excitement with every post because I felt the exact same excitement with mine! From the time I noticed the eggs til they started swimming around. I swear I could feel your pain when you lost your fry, because I would be devastated. I didn't breed mine on purpose, I didn't even know they would..., it just happened, and I love my babies. They are about 3 weeks now, and i think i have about 200 i dont think i lost many. I recently separated them from the parents so I am mommy now. Thanks for sharing your journey! I wish you the best of luck with your JD's. From what I understand they breed regularly so you may have new fry in a few weeks huh?

That's the hope. They spawned twice and the second batch was looking very healthy until the heater broke. The tank chilled so fast i think the babies were to weak to overcome that kind of damage.

Well here we go for round three!!!! Jack and Diane didn't even bother to fill me in this time. They did the deed quietly and hid the eggs. MY husband made note something was going on under a rock, and upon further investigation, I had found a small batch of wrigglers!!! Good thing, I am already breweing baby brine shrimp for my malawi fry and hopefully the cory fry that is yeilded from my cories spawn todey.Looks to be about 75 to 100 baby Jacks. I will keep updating as things happen. I'm just stoked that I have wrigglers. LOL

Thank you very much! My heater and stuff is in good working order this time! Hopefully no freak accidents.

When I first noticed the spawn:

After all had hatched:

It's a small spawn compared to the past. Diane layed her eggs on the sade fo a rock in a cave, and unfortunately due to his size and clumsiness, he lacked the manueverability to adequately spread his seed. About half of the eggs weren't viable and developed fungus, but Diane was a good mommy and cleaned the viable ones and disposed to the fungus ones.
