I will be getting a pair of breeding discus soon.
I have done quite a bit of research already and I want to make sure I haven't missed anything.
So what is everything I need to know for water quality and breeding.
I know it's alot but I need some help being a first time discus breeder.
Thanks

will be some experts on here that can tell u alot, but from what i've read and seen you'll need a bare bottom tank (ideally, for easy cleaning) with something to spawn on (can buy a breeding cone or use a plant pot turned upside down) ph should be at 6.5 you'll need a hma or ro filter really something to do with stuff in the water damaging the eggs, obviously need a well filtered tank and well maintained, large spongefilter or external with a fry guard on intake would best. Temp 29-30 Celsius, rememebring new pairs may eat their first few batches (think some pairs can just be egg eaters) so think about a guard for the eggs, have been told you can use meth blue on the eggs (syringe it over them) but i think it can affect your filter bacteria have been told you dont HAVE to use it, i personally wouldnt as i dont like the filter damaging, it stops fungus but just keep eggs out of light. Easy enough to google what to feed them and when.

If you get the fry big enough to move them to their own tank you'd need to do REGULAR waterchanges, id do it daily, and feed them little and oftern.

Have been told certain things that will be bad for eggs, will benefit the fry, think its calcium, so you'd have to get some advice on that i dunno ins and outs.

Never had fry have had some spawns but this is info i gathered for future reference :good:

You need a good spawning site. They spawn on trees and branches. Heaters and intake tubes they will use but are not good safe sites. So make sure you give them a breeding cone or nice branch.

If they are domestics water ph and that does not matter just try and keep it under ph 8. Water needs to be clean keep nitrates at 10 but lower the better. Weekly large wc of 50% make them happy.

Don't keep any other fish with them if you want to raise fry. My discus spawn all the time I got wiggles but I never raised the fry. Getting fish to spawn is easy for me raising fry not so easy.

Sponge filter would be best it will keep the fry safe. Bear bottom is also good for cleaning and keeping track of fry. Fry need to be with parents for about 2 weeks.

its not about the breeding as given good water conditions discus breed easily. its the fry rearing thats difficult and having the space to grow them on without stunting. if a big spawn of 150-200 you need to cull the weaker fish as not to hinder the development of the others. then as they grow larger you need a good sized tank to bring them on.

what are the strains of the pair you are considering buying? have you kept discus before?

Rather than trying to tell you everything about discus breeding, which would be like writing a book, why don't you tell us your plans, your setup, and so on? We can go from there, filling in the blanks or helping with any adjustments.
