Breeding Amano Shrimp

I know that some folks will say rubbish (their choice) I started off with 7 Amano Shrimp had them about 6months and found 1 carrying eggs Not sure how long she carried them for but it has been 3 months since that time I seen her and know I have what I have counted in my tank is 12 shrimp...I did not do anything special to get the eggs to hatch or survive the babys are now about 1 inch in size...I did read about the hatching and didnt have time or space to do it ...they are hatched in freswater in the wild and the river currents carry them to the sea and they swim back within afew days as I have read on many sites ...
also their are many folks that have had the fortune of getting a few to survive without doing anything....
I will take a picture of a adult and a new one if I can catch them close enough together to show the size diffference..............Beleive or not its true what I say have fun

Thats great to hear wiggler1! But unfortunatley your ammano shrimp may not be C.japonica, there are many other species that are often mislabeled at LFS's and sold as amano shrimp. Often the shrimp mislabeled are easy to breed.

I'd still love to see some documented evidence of this.

Then I can amend and correct my profile in the Index smile.gif

I cant supply you with documented evidence, but nmonks and zig can. I didnt say the eggs will hatch succesfully, all I said was that they will breed in FW. Kind of like how your's did.

Ah I see what you mean now :D

http://caridina.japonica.online.fr/English/ this site is good and the person breeds them!
Thanks as well for that link scott - another I haven't come across (where was I looking ? :S )

I'm setting up a little 4 gallon tank tonight - that absolutely the largest I have space for right now. She's still carrying to the brim. Nothing may come of it - but it will be an interesting exercise nonetheless :)

You know that you have a buyer if you need one :D

Do you have any way of knowing if a male has fertilised them?

I have suspisions that I may have baby cherries. ALthough it might just be a dream.

Oh my Goodness !! :hyper: :hyper:

They're coming ! I'm a extremely excited, so pardon the overdrive :*) . But she's in the 4 gallon tank and I can see she's starting to drop them - and they're wriggling through the water ! :hyper:

The are incredibly microscopic almost, so pointless trying to even try and take a picture.

Fingers crossed. It's a bit of a stumble in the dark, but I'll keep you guys updated

It might be complete failure, but at least I've seen new born wriggling amano shrimp :D

Fantastic bloozoo........i bet you can do this.......how exciting, cant wait to see how you get on, i might even give this a go myself. Fingers crossed.

How many of them is there?........i think the technical term is shrimp lavrae, thats what you have now, i think! Hehe its a bit like reality TV :D live updates from the house

Yes - the articles explicitly said not to put them or the female into brackish water. Once they are all dropped, to remove the female and then just work with the little shrimp. It a bit confusing and controversial about the salinity levels though :/ and I'm really not sure if I should stick to 17ppm (as the Japanese claim are the optimum level) or 35ppm which some of the other reports claimed to be their highest success rate :/

But I'm not doing anything just yet.....

She's just started dropping them. I soooo wish I had my fantastic digital camera with me :-( but it's sitting in Oz with the other half right now. That almost certainly would have captured these little things that can only be described as extremely pinpoint tiny waterfleas - zooming through the water.

I don't want to get my hopes up just yet, but it's ever so exciting :D

I do beleive this is a Amano Shrimp.....if I am wrong, Since I had My LFS order them in for me. This pic is a male
IMG_0912.jpg

If they are not please let me know so I can kick some butt at the store...
They are fairly clear ..with a goldish colour stripe down the back, goldish colour dots on each part of tail
females have 1 role of dots on side at top..then a role of lines in middle then another role of dots on bottom
Males are 3 roles of dots and males are smaller then females.... Let me know if they are maybe a different
kind but maybe simular please

Looks cool, I will gladly take some off your hands. I cant find these anywhere to buy.

Wiggler 1, I would say yours are definitely Amano Shrimp

Well I'm totally enthralled by what's going on in the tank. Mom is grazing some hornwort while steadily releasing these little pinprick wriggling dots. (Yet, still look exactly the same and bursting full - just how many does she hold ?!)
The tank is now full of these little things - due to their size and incredible difficulty to see, impossible to guess how many :S

But.... I have managed a couple of pics. Sorry they're really bad quality and I don't know how too use Photoshop to draw a nice circle around them. At least you can vaguely see how small they are compared to a hornwort frond. And for all you know, I'm showing you a spec of dirt on the glass, but hey: here they are!

(top right hand corner of 2nd pic is only "shrimp doo-doo" as someone put it so nicely ;) )
