I decided to add some discus to my tank which consists of mostly South American dwarf cichlids, mainly Apistogramma's. Since the water is perfect for them (I keep a soft water low ph tank) I thought I would give it a go.

I drove 1.5 hours to visit a breeder with excellent fish. I bought a White Rabbit Albino Pink, a Brilliant Blue, a Blue body Red Leopard Snake and a Deep Red Turquoise. I also picked up a few German Blue Rams he had which are the best I have seen. While the Brilliant Blue and Deep Red Turk, look similar now as juvies, they will look VERY different as adults.

He had an awesome setup and some of the best fish I have seen, this is his full time profession, not a hobby breeder. His equipment and setup was very impressive.

Even as juvies, the fish are already showing awesome colors!!

I was going to get a 240 gal tank soon to house large aggressive cichlids, but I may have to make it a discus tank now.

Beautiful fish!!!!

How you get such good photos of them?

For good photos:

1. Tank light on.
2. Camera flash off.
3. Macro mode on camera.
4. Put camera right up to glass. (do not use zoom!)
5. Hope fish stays still long enough for camera to focus and take pic.

I find this technique to take the best pics and represent the color of the fish most accurately. The problem is that without the flash, the exposure time is longer and if the fish s not perfectly still for the exposure time (sometimes up to 1/2 sec- 1 sec) the pic will be blurry.

It usually takes me about 50 pics to get 10 awesome shots.

Thanks for that ill give it a go and try and post a few here, is it possible to change the exposure time on your camera>? I think i can on mine so will try that, i guess having very active fish is not a bad thing :)

You can, but I just leave it on auto and let the camera decide what exposure time is best fro the amount of light.

Especially like the 2nd discus, looks like it got character for some reason.

Who was the breeder you bought those discus from? Did you ask him how old the fish were? You're right, they do have a lot of color for juvi's.

Super looking discus, they are very healthy and well fed looking. Lovely tank they are in too.
