Blue Ringed Octopus

I wear gloves if i need to put a hand in the tank.

Ehhhh...you sure you don't want to go the long grabby plastic/metal tools type rout instead? As someone who has also kept tarantulas and large-ish cranky crustaceans, I'm not a big believer in the protection most gloves offer unless they're taken off a suit of armor. You have to factor in what happens if the animal gets a good hold and has a bit of time to chew on the material while you're flailing your arm around trying to get it off. Sometimes there's not a lot of warning either leading up to one of those events.

hmm, i dislike it when fish are taken from the wild and even live rock with creatures that have been born in the sea in it.

Hopefully this won't be spurring a long debate, but I feel I should add that captive-bred animals don't just spring out of thin air. Wild collection has to happen at some point unless a species is going to be completely ruled out of the hobby from the very start. I don't agree with collecting an animal unprepared (as with others, I worry a bit about that in this case), but the work has to start somewhere.

sorry, i know things need to start somewhere, and as you said as long as their "prepared" it should be fine, but i think wild animals should be taken out to be bread or kept properly, and im afraid in this case the small tank really doesnt qualify for either in my books. its always a concern of many people and i just feel things like this octopus should be being kept in better ways or let back out to the wild. i would hate to see something this beautiful die when it really doesnt need to!!

I think it is fine short term. Obviously when it gets larger then the responsible thing must be done in re homing ie back to the sea or a large aquarium/sea-life centre type!

rehoming it back to the sea after a period of time in captivity is doubly cruel - - it has adapted to not needing to hunt for food or live with predators - releasing it back into a hostile area after a length of time in a tank is a death sentence.

releasing it now is the best bet

or, constructing a LARGE tank for it.

how large do these grow?

iv done a tad research, only get to about 7 inch but feel its very unfair as they are such an intelligent species!! i agree needs to be sent back, but some people like to put themselves above their pets, so who knows!!

Its not a matter of putting yourself above a fish. Do you only keep stupid fish? Oscars are intelligent would you say not to keep them due to their intelligence level? I have fish that are wild caught, I dont see the problem?!

After re-reading my comment and your reply I can see how I was wrong. I apologise, however I still dont think its bad to keep it in a big enough tank at home or re-home in a public aquaria.

WOW where did you get that octopus from? Did you know the poison they have in their bite is the same poison found inside pufferfish except this octopus uses it to kill its prey KOOL :hyper:.

+1 from me I would love one of these

Ya he is an entertaining little fellow.

Always watching me as i walk around the kitchen, And not like a fish, he's actually sizing me up.

I've managed to feed him a few times now (which consists of dropping a crab through a small cap i open in the glass and using a long stick to scare the crab around to in front of his cave). He sends out a tentacle to see what's going on, and if hungry (which is most of the time) he flashes all his blues and rings and pounces on the crab and slowly takes it back into his cave.

There's a little pile of crab bodies lying outside his den. Quite impressive.

Edit: And by the way, the 2 foot tank is on being set up now

ill try and get a small video of him eating tonight. just got some more crabs for him today, he eats a lot!!! going to try frozen foods soon

He is SO cool..! Lots of pictures and videos as he grows please :D
