Blue Acara

I am thinking about getting a blue acara within the next few days. I have saw them in my lfs o Dr the years and never been able to get one, but now I am.

From what I've read about them in the fish index section on here, my tank is perfect for them. But it doesn't say anything about numbers. I would like to get 2-3 so I can see there colours during courting.

Is this a good idea or would I be better off just getting a single acara?

Tank mates will be gold severum. 2 firemouth, red tail shark and 10 tiger barbs in a 55g tank.

I wouldn't get more than 1 in that size tank and s/he will probably bully the Tiger Barbs Blue Acara's are known for bullying smaller fish, especially when breeding. Also, when breeding they will claim up to 55 gallons to themselves as they will want places to move their fry to.

What would be better looking out of a male and female? Or are they much the same?

Pretty much the same, males may be slightly more colourful but that's all as far as I'm aware. Like I say, just watch him/her for aggression towards your Tiger Barbs

Excellent, cheers very much will do. Going to get 1 this afternoon (hopefully). Looking forward to it. Will try get a male and might up my number of tiger barbs too if they have some.

Well, got one tonight. Had a look for a while, my lfs had some nice ones to choose from, but it was one of the smaller females that looked the best so I took that.

Awesome looking fish. Will post a pic tomorrow night once she's settled in a bit.

Awesome, would love to see her Was going to get one for a tank I used to have but decided against as I wanted it to be a Semi Aggressive Community. Not quite peaceful but not aggressive where everything rips everything to shreds
