can these be kept on their own?

I think all cichlids appreicate at least some dither fish. When you say on their own, do you mean a single fish or a group of the same fish? or a pair?

I've not owned any myself but all the info out there on google point towards keeping them as a mated pair. I couldnt hazard a guess what they would be like as a single addition to a tank. My guess would be that they would be fine, but then im not one for keeping a single species, i like my tanks to at least have 2 or 3 of the same type, purely for the sake of the fish being able to stay with its own kind.

yeah when they breed the tanks can become a bit of a warzone. perhaps look into getting a couple of females or males, thats the route i tend to go down now.

only problem is that they are hard to sex when young.

i think i have 2 female convicts but cant be sure till they grow

Blue acaras eat small fish. I have had my female with a mate she stressed him to death. Then I had her in a community she eat my small fish picked them
off one by one. Now she is 3 yr old and 5" she lives with the big boys and does great with them. Blue acaras are not good for a communtiy tank with small fish.
