Bloated Stomach... Help Needed Quickly.

If the parasite in the water is what you are wondering about... I'm fairly certain it's a mosquito larvae,

MosquitoLarvaWithWaterMolecules.jpg

I doubt it would have caused the fish death. If anything, it would have been eaten. If you had them in both tanks my guess would be a mosquito got in and laid eggs, after all Louisiana is fairly populated with them?

Thats what i posted a while back K.J., whilst its possible it is a parasitic problem, the OPs pics of the 'weirdy thing' look remarkably like a mosquito larvae..

Iceegrl,,,,, the freaky looking worm thing..... can you remember if, hwen you disturbed the water it wiggled away to the bottom really fast? If so i definately think its a mosquito larvae and not the source of the problem.

As i say thats not to say its not a parasite that killed your fish.... but mossie larvae are not parasites (although the adults are).

I dont blame you for not cutting open your dead fish, im too squeamish to do it also, although if another died iwth similar symptoms i think id find someone who would do it.

E,

However it is possible that the mosquito larvae had something nasty like pesticide in them, should have been a sudden death though. Fish love mosquito larvae.

I was just looking at the link on here again and with the new pics posted... I am pretty sure that is what it was. It did dive for the bottom. In one of the pics you can see it going into the gravel. When it swam it looked something like an inch worm or accordian.
In the pics of the one that died you can see something in the middle of her belly with a black place on the end by her head. It looked a lot like the things swimming in the 10g so I assumed it was the same thing. The only thing the 2 tanks had in common was a couple of pieces of wood. I took the wood that I had soaking in the 55g and put it in the 10g. The next day I had these things swimming in the 10g. That is when I got the idea that this must be what was happening to my danio. I figured that I must have transferred it to the other tank with the wood. There were no fish in the 10g yet. I had just gotten it from my sister.
I have not yet actually seen them in my 55g. I just figured they had to have come from somewhere, so it had to have been the 55g. I had just cleaned and set up the 10g. It was the only thing that made sense.
If that was mosquito larvae then I must have had a whole different problem.
I think it was germ that said some kind of worm. (can't recall the name right now) the_wolf said egg bound. Then she died from bacterial infection.
She did have some small open wounds when she died. They were on the bottom and sides of her belly. There was nothing hanging out of them though, and nothing ever came out of her in the tank I had her in. The only thing I ever saw was the thing sticking out of her butt. It was there the whole time. It didn't move. In fact it never changed or moved at all. It was just there. I kind of figured the wounds was where she swole too much and it ripped her a little. Before she died her scales had started lifting a good bit. That is what it looked like any way.

I finally caught this one. I have been trying for several days. I finally got smart. I put some food in the net and put it down into the tank and waited for her to go in. When she finally did I just raised it up and netted the others out that were in there with her.
I turned her over and looked quickly. She is pretty stressed, so I didn't want to mess with her too much right now.
The under side of her belly is white with what looks like stretch marks. They are red. She has on small spot that looks like it may have torn or cut or something. It isn't red or have any signs of infection yet. I didn't see anything in it either.
She is swollen on both sides, but only has the lumps on one side. Her scales are not raised yet. She was breathing normally until I started messing with her. I didn't see anything else.
I forgot to check the water. I will do it in a little while. I have to get Shay in bed right now.
I will post my stats as soon as I get her down.
Thank you for helping!

I may have a problem...
I used my quick dip test. I always do that first. Then if anything is off I pull out the real kit.
I had to pull out the liquid kit!!!
My pH showed 8! My pH is always between 6.5 and 7. (Usually 6.5)
I pulled out the liquid kit and did the regular test. It came out too blue, so I did the high pH test. It was right on 8.
Here are all my stats...
ammonia 0 (good) always
nitrate 20 (high) usually 5
nitrite 0 (good) always
GH 75 (soft) usually 55-60
KH 140 (ideal) usually 100-120
pH 8 (alkaline) usually usually about 6.5
temp 75f

My nitrates, GH, KH, and pH are all high... WHY? :shout:
What causes this? I haven't changed anything!
It has ecco-complete, 2 large and several small pieces of mopawny(??) wood (still leaching), and a bunch of plants. (and tons of algae) I haven't gotten any algae eaters yet. I haven't needed them before.
It, as stated before, is 55usg.
It currently has about 10 corys and about 15 small danios.
I have a aqua-tech 30-60 and a aqua-tech 10 running with bio sponges filter cartridges and extra floss plus an extra foam filter. There is a bubble bar in the tank, but I never use it. It is there so all I have to do is plug it in if there is ever an emergency.
I use prime for water changes. (about 30-40% every 2 weeks depending on how things are going)
I add flourish trace just once a week, and flourish once a week. (not the same day)
This is my normal routine.

Will parasite clear (jungle) make all that go up like that? Even if it did... I have done 2 50% water changes since the last dose. That should have gotten me fairly close to normal again. I also added a 100 micron filter pad to all my filters 2 days ago to help clear the water.

That is all the info. Did I miss anything?
What do I do now?

Thanks for helping! :friends:

Do you have any limestone or coral sand in the tank.
Got to find out what rasied your ph.
I would get this med for internal parasites.

Metronidazole: (FLAGYL

New Life Spectrum has Thera + A that has garlic for wild caught fish. Very high grade food. But I don't know if they have a flake.

There are also of course several brands that carry liquid aquarium garlic.

I wonder if this is what my pleco has.... all the same symptons, except mine is floating and cant go back down

And I read about your dead fish coming back to life experience. I had a bette that I thought was dead...when i put him in the toilet to flush him he started swimming around!....weird

It is interesting that the tubiflex were most likely the culprits in the referenced thread, and I remember ICEEGRL was experimenting with tubeflex worms with her Corys for a time. I don't know what brand? I believe Hikari are guaranteed parasite free.

My tubifex worms are by Wardley. The tanks that I feed them in have no problems. I have never fed them in the tank that is having the problem.
How do I know if the med worked? I didn't see anything in there before during or after. I just had the fish that had issues. The fish all still look the same.
What do I do now?
There is no rocks of any kind in the tank. There is drift wood and plants.
I am doing another water change tonight. I am going to check my stats again then.

I am in and out. I have been very busy on top of having health issues. I am sorry it has taken me so long to get back on here.

I do appreciate everyone trying to help me.
I will post the stats tonight or in the morning. (as soon as I get a chance)

Thanks again!

I am pretty sure that they were freeze dried. I think she mentioned it when she spoke of the Corys liking them. Also Wardleys is a fish food brand.

Thanks for helping me keep up Sue!
The worms are those freeze dried squares that you stick to the tank wall.
I took some pics last night, but I haven't gotten the from the camera yet. I will get them in a little bit.
My stats are getting a little better with each water change I do.

I am going to check it again to see if it has changed from last night.
I will post the results in a little bit.

Thanks!
