I was in the "blackout of '03" last night. Fortunately, the power was off where I am located only a couple hours or so. Basically, my filter was off for I'd say about 3 hours. I assume the colonies of bacteria in the filter died during that time. What do you think? If they did all die, ya think this will cause a spike and a mini-cycle, or should the bacteria in my gravel hold the fort down while the filter bacteria builds back up?

The filter being off for 3 hours won't kill the bacteria in the filter medium, I really wouldn't worry.

We lost power a few weeks back for about 7 hours. The only thing I lost was 2 new baby panda cories. But that was from the stress. We pumped air into each tank (I had 5 then, have 6 now) using a bike pump. I went the next day and invested in a $10 battery operated air pump and I plan to purchase more as funds allow. In that short amount of time, I wouldn't worry about the bacteria at all.
But I would recommend picking up a battery operated air pump just in case!
