Unfortunately around the corner is too far for anyone to want to come out here. I certainly have options, I'm going to think about them all for sure. I was able to stuff some old filter sponges into the overflow box and it has helped with the noise. For the next while I'll be tolerating the noise, and will continue to find ways to make my current setup better. I am going to go see those saltwater experts tomorrow. Now that Petey is back to 100% I want to go back and take a look at the Tangs :) While I'm in I will try to get as much tips as I can. Unfortunately all my phone conversations with the various experts didn't go so well. Maybe an in person visit will get better results.

Thanks everyone

There are several methods for silencing an overflow.

Try Googling 'Durso standpipe'

I'm not exactly sure how to use a durso standpipe in one of these:

Yesterday I was quite pleased that I was able to silence the overflow box at least a little bit. Funny how my mind has changed after going down this morning to check on my fish. Sounds like a waterfall down there! :S

Call me crazy but I swear everything is running significantly quieter today. I've decided I am going to be innovative to insulated the noise with the current set up until I am confident enough to switch tanks or drill my current one. Ive spoke with numerous trusted reefers from the LFS's and all think drilling is a fine idea. It's obviously not ideal with livestock in the tank. they suggested having large clean containers with tank water to house the fish in while the drilling and plumbing takes place. If something were to go wrong many have volunteered to house my fish while I sort everything out. so that's all reassuring.

Ok - Now I see- didn't realise it was that type of overflow box.

I had one very similar on my old 4fter. what I did so silence it was remove the filter sponge & replace it with a short length of PVC pipe that is the same height as the usual water level in that side of the box (This may take a bit of fine tuning - so start with plenty of pipe & cut it off piece by piece until you find the correct level ie, so the water doesn't spill out of the top of the box!). Then a put 2 x 90degree elbows right next to each other to make an upside down 'U' configuration. Pop this on top of the pipe et voila - one silenced drain! (you may need to drill a small (tiny!) vent hole in the top side of one of the elbows)

Excuse the rough sketch!

Thanks ainsy, I'll experiment with that. I didn't think there was enough room inside the overflow to throw in a couple elbows on each drain but I will definitely try something. I'm happy to know that this current setup should work out fine. I'll try building some pipes for the overflow and see if I can insulate around the pump to silence the hum from it. Everything should be good after that. Thanks again!

On to fish:

I went and seen those tangs again the other day. I'm at home for the day so I'm debating heading into the city and getting them. The thought of getting my first tangs excite me! Knowing they are ich magnets scares me! Any thoughts on that?

You know it FF! I may be terrible with a camera but it doesn't stop me from trying! :)

Well my 1" return nozzle has finally arrived. I swear it was delvered cross country on horseback. Anyways, it was the finally piece to my plumbing puzzle and I can't wait to get the new pump/overflow in. I am hoping to start on it right away, and should have everything running shortly.

Other than that, nothing exciting from me. The Trigger has more personality then I ever thought possible from a fish. He likes to show off at times, he plays with Petey, and he even likes to landscape. He's so much fun that I am going to do some research on a clown and see if he would make a suitable pal for Picasso. As far as I know the Triggers should be fine with eachother, but there could be issues with the other fish. Shocking how friendly the Picasso is, I think that's a rare occurance and I got lucky.

I'll let you all know how the new equipment turns out, wish me luck

Good Luck! Would you be so kind as to post your plumbing for us?

-Tyler

Yep the tangs are ich magnets!

Advise would be to watch them very carefully in the LFS - I would even make an excuse to put a deposit on the fish that you want & come back 2 weeks later to make sure it is still clear!

Then

Keep stress levels as low as possible
make occasional use of garlic supplements in their food
consider a uv sterilizer

and most important of all

Pray

Also make sure and ask to watch them eat, really important. If they aren't eating at the store they won't eat at home. Also check for nice fat bellies, if one looks skinny its usually too late.

If you want it might also be a good idea to set up a quarantine tank for future fish additions, it would suck to buy one sick fish and have it take out the tank.

@tyler you want a pict of my plumbing or just a description of what I'm running? It certainly isn't a work of art but I'm working in it. I'm currently away, looking at tangs :)

@ainsy ive been keeping an eye on these tangs for a few weeks now. They get along great with other tangs, are eating well, and look healthy. More to come...

@Gab a QT would be ideal, I want to do this, but for the fish I want to stock would I need to run another 125G tank?

Oh and ainsy I do have a UV Ster but it's offline due to para guard treatments, which I've continued even tho Peteys spots are gone

If you could I would try and find a used tank, it doesn't need to be that big so you can dose meds at a managable amount. The smallest I would with fish like yours would be a 30 gallon, but you could also get a 40 gallon breeder or a 55, and all it needs is some form of filtration (mechanical would be cheapest) and a heater.

Also how big is the tank those tangs are in? If its bigger than yours I'd highly recommend introducing all your tangs at the same time and keeping a very close eye for any form of aggression.

Right on, I'm going to look into that for sure. This is probably a stupid question but I could use my eheim canister filter I was running on my first 90G fresh system? And a QT can be completely bare bottom?
