Well I've got a senegal bichir that was bitten by a feeding severum and now appears to have septicemia. I've done a water change and my ammonia and nitrite are 0 and nitrate ~5. Tank is an 80g btw. I have a bgk in there too. I've never really had to deal with much in the way of diseases so I was wondering how the bgk will cope with the tetracycline. I was planning to do maybe a little more than half a dose or so and see how that goes. Does this sound fine?

I've never used this medication before so I do not know. Does it say anything in the leaflet or bottle about treatment with BGK in the tank?

Nope. I know in general bgks are supposed to be rather sensitive to medication but I've only had to dose with one in a tank once, and that was with maracyn 1 and 2, not an antibiotic like tetracyline.

EDIT: Setting up a qt tank is not a viable option right now as it was broken when we were finishing our basement.

I would only use tetracycline in issolation. As it wipes the benefical bacteria out in the filter.
Is more the parasite meds with these fish.
You need treat as septicemia hard to cure once it advances.

I have plenty of mature media from other tanks and I set up some additional filters with mature media on other tanks as to prepare.

What do you mean by "Is more the parasite meds with these fish."?

I have maracyn 1 and 2. Should I just do that? I figured since it originated from a wound a broad spectrum antibiotic would be best. I thought it wouldn't be parasitic because it came when the fish had a wound.

Ive done that before now. Just kicked started the tank again with mature filter media from another tank.
That's fine as long as there no desease in the tank.

Some fish are very sensitive to parasite meds.
I wouldn't mess around with septicemia, you need to use the full dose. So you will have to use the full dose of med on the fish.

Septicemia

Symptoms:

Fish may have reddening at fin bases, blood streaks throughout the fins and body, small hemorrhages around the eyes. Dull listless behavior and lack of appetite may also be present.

Cause:

Systemic bacterial infection caused by various bacteria, including Aeromonas, Pseudomonas and Vibrio. The illness is often brought on by poor water quality or as a result of parasitic infestations or other infections. These bacteria enter the blood stream and circulate through the tissues causing inflammation and damage. Inflamed blood vessels in the skin and at fin bases stand out. Blood vessel and heart tissue damage cause hemorrhaging and consequently leakage of body fluids into the abdomen, which may lead to Dropsy.

Treatment:

Water conditions must be improved for all fish in the tank, regardless of how many fish are infected. Check your water’s Treat with Kanacyn or Tetracycline as well as with a medicated food if the fish will eat. If parasites are suspected, all the fish in the tank should be treated with antiparasitic medication. Using salt to help restore osmotic balance might be helpful.

Alright so I guess I'll try a full dose of tetracycline. Should I try and do maracyn 1 and 2 also? As I said a qt tank isn't an option otherwise I would have just done that.

I would just use the tetracycline.
Good Luck.
If the fish is still eating could also feed him with medicated food.

He's still eating. If I can I'll try and run out to my lfs and grab some medicated food. And I only had one package of tetracycline on hand so I'm gonna have to go get more of that too.

And thanks!

Ok.
Let me know how he gets on bless him.
Good Luck.

Update: The bichir is doing much better, external symptoms are pretty much gone, not lethargic or anything and is eating normally. The bgk seems to be hanging in there just fine along with all the other fish.

Thanks Wilder!

That's good news.
Don't cut the med to short. I think I would do a second round.
