Bettas With Swollen Stomachs?

From what I understand, the word dropsy is literally referring to the edema, or swelling of the fish. What causes the swelling is unknown, and may vary. Some think the swelling can be caused by a bacterial infection. My friends fish had dropsy who is still alive today, she gave Maracyn & Maracyn 2 as well as epsom salt baths.
I've read not to add aquarium salt because that makes it worse. I've also read epsom salts make it worse. Basically it seems like no one knows for sure. I've read antibiotics can help, but I've also read antibiotics can make the kidney failure worse as antibiotics are hard on kidneys. Maracyn and Maracyn 2 are good in this regard because I think they're relatively easy on the fish. You should tell people not to waste a bunch of money adding loads of antibiotics to the water, though. They should make sure the water is clean, then pick one antibacterial medication and stick with it.

In terms of medication I would go with Mauricia's view on it, with the fish's immune system down as it is, using loads of medications can be bad and make things worse. For both constipation and dropsy, plenty of water changes. In the case of constipation peas with starve days and daphnia (these are good on bettas for that). If the bulge gets uncomfortably large with the scaling out then epsom salt baths recommended. Always recommend medicine of choice easily in store for ease if customer wishes to attempt it. Please feel free to make a leaflet for reference and use the pics above if need to help customers identify (have more pics if needed for that from different angles). Might be handy for showing to them, i currently have a boy that is bloated and trying to get waistline down, if you wanted comparisons for people would be happy to provide (though he hates the camera!)

When i first got my betta i got overly excited about feeding him, because he was such a fat pig and aggressively ate every piece of food in the tank. The next day he was floating on the top with a bloated stomach, that was nearly white...i was really freaked out and thought for sure he was a goner, turns out it was just swim-bladder, the remedy was simply not feeding him for a day, he has been fine ever since :)
