I'm afriad to post this in the Betta section, so I decided here might be okay..Has anyone kept a male or female Betta with Platies, and Cherry Barbs?
Could this work?
I'm just thinking about getting another Betta, as I bought my friend one the other day, turns out hes abosolutely beautiful, goofy purple and pink fins, a veiltail but I think they look amazing too. If it doesnt, the little bugger would get a whole 5gallon to himself, which i would prolly divide and get another male.
A few questions..
Would the barbs nip at him? My Platy is bigger than them, and they arent afraid of him, but I havent seen any nipping as well...
Would the Platy be a problem? I thought it would be okay, since he has no long fins, but he is colourful..
I read the "acceptable Betta tankmates" topic, but it didnt say about cherry barbs, and with Livebearers it could be done, but with caution...I'm leaning more towards a male

female. i've kept mine with serpae tetras, but i'm not sure about platties...

Cherry Barbs are one of the shyer, less nippy barbs...but I'd be a little hesitant to try it, still. Maybe someone else will have more experince with this, though.

As for Platies...well, sometimes they can be nippy, or the Betta can pick on them because of the bright colors. I currently have a female Betta with one Variatus Platy, and one male Betta with 3 Maculatus Platies and they are doing fine...but I've also had problems with Platies and Bettas. It's basically hit or miss with Bettas and Platies...and any other fish with Bettas, for that matter.

If you do try it, make sure to watch them, and remove the tankmates or Betta at any sign of aggression.

Yeah...I might go get 2 female Platy instead for that tank, and devote the 5gal to a betta, lol....Just I thought it would be better, as I have no filter for the 5gal, and the deco wouldnt be as nice..lol Once i get some money, I'll see how i feel, thanks

I would be hesitant to put the betta in there for two reasons (neither of which is fin nipping). The first is that bettas don't like fast moving things, so they might be spooked by the cherry barbs. The second is bettas can't handle alot of current in their water. When I had my betta in a 5 gal with a filter, he was getting blown around the tank by the filter and his tail would get stuck against the intake.

I would stick the betta in a 5G with a very small filter and a couple of corys or gobys or ottos or something.

Keep your larger tank for "normal" community fish.

Gobies eh? Since I know near nothing about them, I dont think so, but I could put some oto cats in? :D
They are really cute, I'm waiting till i can put them in my bigger tank as well, but I don't want to hurry, i just picked up my trio a week ago...
I set up the 5gal just for the betta, I don't want to risk my other fish, as they are all looking good, and I seem to get problems lol, The 5gal wont have a filter, but a heater for winter, and I'll do double water changes, instead of just the 10 usually. They're right beside eachother, so its easy, I had a Betta live (with a goldfish, i know, i know!!) for 2years or so, never cleaned it, fed it maybe once a week, or overfed, and it lived fine, I was 10 so I didnt know much better, but I'm sure he'll do fine today....
Off to Petsmart, Walmart, to look for a poor guy...Big Als is too expensive on them; they are treated the same too :(

I wouldn't put any other type of tropical fish like otos in a tank that is not filtered or cycled, bettas have been living in uncycled tanks for hundreds of years and have grown accustomed to them but other fish like otos simply can't handle the stress of constant water changes, low oxygen levels and fluctuating water quality stats- they wouldn't last long and would always be stressed in such a tank.

I had my male betta in with 2 platies and it was fine. (once I got rid of the female molly, she chased after the betta mercilessly!!)

EDIT: He died yesterday, of no apparent cause.Checked him, then 2 hours later check again and he was at the top, gills not moving, gone.... Does anyone know how long Walmarts pet policy is? I thought saving one would be okay but jeez, this is appauling...It cant be the temp, my other fish are fine, even when their tank hits 86, and the bettas was only 82!!(I thought they liked warm water eh?)

Got a betta:)

Well, the betta is in the 5gallon right now, I'm unsure of to out him in or not...found him at Walmart, which wasnt too bad actually, they must have just cleaned up and got new fish in, they even had dwarf gouramis!!
He was in a breeding net, in a tank full of neons and a few otos, and a tiny baby plec lol, and looked healthy. I did notice 2 tiny pinholes in his fins though, but hes a gourgeous purple/green/red/blue, and I havent seen many his colour, actually. He was in a community tank, but then again kind of not, ya know? I think that it might be okay, just cuz hes obviously used to other fish being around. I dont know. Hes lovin the 5 gallon, he swims and flares at everything, even the silly turtle ornament lol. But if i put my finger up he hides..hmmm...I think I probably will try him at least once in the main tank, just out of curiousity, but for now, hes in his own little tank.

i once had a betta with three tetras and suprisingly it worked. No fin nipping from the tetras and no aggression from the betta, that betta lived for about 2 years and there never seemed to be a problem but now looking back i wouldnt have done it in the first place.
