Hey

My betta has something wrong with his head/face. His cheeks and top of head look like they have red spots like the scales fell off. Has anyone seen this in a betta?

I've never actually seen it before but it sounds like your fish has sores. You'll probably want to do a 20% water change then start your little guy on some anit-Bacterial medication.

any chance of a photo, please?

What are your water stats;

pH:
Nitrate:
Nitrite:
Ammonia:
Temp:

ok update...its been a day? and one of the spots above his eyes has now turned white. The tank is not cycled (trying to do a fish in cycle) but I didn't think it affects bettas like that...they breathe air more than rely on water don't they? don't know could be completely wrong. Nothings in there that could be harming him...no decoration or other fish. I had him with a girl betta when I first put him in the tank but removed her the next morning seeing as he all but killed her O.O...but thats harm on her she didn't pick on him at all.

=( if it is sores what could be causing it? Also I use RO water with my 29G but usually use treated tap with my 10G that the betta is in. Could this be the culprit?

Well yes bettas breathe air; but no they dont rely on air more than water. If you take your betta out of water it will die so it's kinda essential.

Betta may have fungus; but a picture would help.

Keeping males and females together is big no.

Could be the water; build up of ammonia/chlorine in your untreated tap water. Do a large water change (I'd be tempted to even say change all of it)-temperature match the water and but your de-chlorinator in.

Betta's need the EXACT same care water wise as other fish.

Do you have a filter/heater?

What are your water stats? If we know you'll recieve better help rather than random stabs in the dark

id suspect his scales came off from fighting with the female. just keep the water clean (daily small waterchanges) for a week and see if there is improvement. watch for signs of white patches developing in the area.
all the best.
cheers

Thanks for the advice...and yes I learned that male plus female is a big no  He is in a 10G with a heater set at 78 degrees F and a new filter. Again I'm into the first week of a fish in cycle..I did a 50% water change yesterday and will do another one probally tomorrow. I don't understand how he would be hurt by the female because she just ran away from what I saw(but again didn't see much of it)..but I could see how stress? could cause this...idk it's just so out of the blue. I can try to get a pic but my camera really sucks so idk how much help it will be

you said yourself they were fighting. doesnt matter who started it or who got the bad end of the stick. the fighting could have caused injury/scales to come off. just keep the water clean and see how he fairs. if no improvement within a week's time, may start to think about treatment options if he looks worse.
cheers
