My Betta has blown his tail again, right after it finally healed. He has recently been moved from his 1 gallon bowl to a 4 gallon tank with filtration and a light. He also has two tank mates, panda cories. Before I had healed his fin with Melafix and Aquarium Salt. I know I can't use the salt with the cories but is Melafix safe for a new tank? Since it's antibacterial will it make it recycle? I cycled this tank useing media from an estalished tank.

The Melafix instructions say it won't harm biological filtration but I thought I'd ask anyways.

No. You will be fine....just watch how much you use.

I've never heard of a blown fin. Can you explain how a fish would do this, please. Have any pictures of this blown fin? I hate to be nosey, obviously when you are upset about your fish...but I am just very curious about this, as I've never seen/heard of it before.

:( sorry it happened to your fishie though...when they get sick it really sucks...worse then with a dog or cat..becasue you can't hold them and pet them to try and make them feel better.

I've never heard of a blown fin either.

A "blown fin" refers to a male who has either flared too much or had too much movement during shipment and a majority of the tail breaks off or falls off. I don't know which. It happens overnight, so it is not the same think as fin rot. This normally only happens to HM males and maybe some DTs, but the males with the huge fins can't support the weight of the tail as well as their betta ancestors. This is a problem with HM males, and most don't keep their tails perfect once they reach adulthood. They normally show the nice males up until 8 months sometimes, but after that it is too difficult to keep them from blowing the tail. It grows back in time just as a split or fin rot would do, but they can do it again if they become too active. It may not grow back fully though, because of the weight, and my males that have blown their fins have not fully grown back in a period of 5 months. This happens to alot of nice HM fish imported. Hope this explains this more because this is the knowledge I have on this subject.

 I've got a red male veil that does that quite often. He's got huge finnage and when he gets too active manages to mess up the very end of his tail which is longer than his body length. It grows back quite fast.

Here is the before and after picture, they explained blow out well. He's a pretty active fish and the end of his tail just sheds. He is in good spirits though, swimming like normal and has a regular appetite.
