Well I'm using the eheim now. It came with a spray bar so I'm using that and it's doing a pretty good job of evening out the flow. It looks to be a fairly high flow rate but not ridiculous, Gerald the cycling goldfish doesn't seem to mind it so It's probably ok.
Apparently the eheims last for years and years so I can always use it on a bigger tank in the future anyway.
