I had my doubts, and to be truthful I'd much rather spend the money and buy a stand. Cemment blocks just dont cut if for me.
Must be hard finding a stand fior that though.

There are indeed stands taht will take the size and weight for a tank of this size but unfortunately the floor wont. These stands are designed to stand directly on the floor but my floor is only floorboards with beams. These simply wont hold the weight. So the stand now sits directly on the foundations of the foundations of hte house and the floor is moulded around the stand.
I agree the concrete blocks are unsightly. However these will be hidded eventually when i finally get around to puttinf the base covers around teh unit. I havent done this yet as there is still quite a bit of work to do regarding the sump and plumbing etc.

emm mite be a silly question but 5 gallons is alot of water... where does it go, like will this be messin up your room?

Sounds alot doesnt it? :S There is a large surface area however (7ft x 2.5ft). sitting about 6inches over this water is alot of lighting.. namely 1x400w and 2x 150w halides. these kick out a hell of alot of heat and because of hte flow in the tank the surface of the water is constantly moving. Thus the evaopration is quite high. House house is very well ventilated so we never suffer with condensation or damp in the house at all.

get one of these:

Err no!

Lionfish are stunning creatures but they would soon make short work of any fish small enoughto get into their mouths. This means just about everything in my tank! These fish grow very large anf very quickly. I have considred the dwarf species but even these grow too large for some of hte fish i wish to keep at a latr stage so unfortunately i wont be keeping them any day soon :/

IS that a mickey mouse doll i see? tongue2.gif

Yes!
We go to Euro disney every year and this is the wifes cuddly disney collection :S We now have to rehouse them however as imsure the wife will not be happy if micky or dumbo fall off into the tank with all that salt water

Awesome stuff. One day I may be brave enough to attempt something like that, after I win the lottory ovcourse w00t.gif

Yep many say i am.. i am beginning to agree with them lately too! :hyper:
It doesnt have to cost a fortune. I have said this many times onthis forum that marines dont have to cost as much as people think. Admittedly they do carry some initialcosts that are higher than freshwater but over a long period of time their running costs are really very cheap.

Great pics Nav. It's good to see that thing coming on. Though the pictures really hide just how big the tank is from front to back.

Is the sump online yet? And how goes the attempted cryptic zone?

Andy

I have had a bit of a re-aquascape cos i felt the liverock was not really giving me an indication of how much more i really need to add. I now realise that i only have just over half the amount i need to allow for a fully stocked tank.

No Andy, the sump is not running yet so this means the cryptic zone is not operational yet either. I really need to get this into action very soon though bcause i want to finish the base cabinet and i cannot do this until the plumbing is done.

I love boxfish but alas i will never have one in my system :/ Too large and if they get stressed they can poison the tank and kill everything within it

I havent posted a piccy of the new aquascape yet but will shortly.

Building the stand on a cement base under the floor to take the weight off the joists is inspired!

We shall be upgrading Martha's tank in the very near future and I was getting seriously worried about the prospect of an eight foot tank on 180 year old elm joists above a three foot drop. Brilliant solution. Just brilliant.

Fantastic tank you have there too!
