ok heres my thing i want to totaly overload my 6x2x2(get it in 1 month) with bio filtration im in the process of picking things up for it ive just had an eheim professional 3 delivered today i was wondering would a fluidized bed filter work if i put it in-line on the pro 3's output hose? i have not got a bed filter yet so i figured i would see what all you fine people thought of my little mad scientist idea before i go and drop 80 quid on a bit of plastic....cheers :)

If you set up a bypass on your outlet pipe and run the bed filter off that you will have no problems at all,
the reason for running the bypass is cause the flow threw the bed filter is a lot lower than the ouput of the Pro 3

what about if i was to run it on a 2028 pro II would that make a difference do u think?

right this is what i do on my tank you say you want lots of filtration then do this it works great on my tank

get 2 x pro 3s
then use a pro 2 the 3 tray type and use that to run the sand bed filter
its also a good idear to have a couple of inturnal filters to polish the water i use 2 x 2252s with a extra module added to each

if you realy want to go to town like i have the pro3 has 2 x down pipes take one of them directly to the pro3 then the other run throw a presurised pond bucket then into the pro3 (pond buckets about £60 each you dont need the one with a UV) the pond bucket acts as a big massive pre filter and you wont need to clean the pro3s as much

You did say you wanted to go to town and i have been running my tank like that for near 2 years now 8)

Putting a vastly oversized biological filter on a tank is not necessarily a good idea. There will only be enough bacteria to process the available nitrogenous waste. One correctly sized filter will be full of bacteria, two will only be half loaded, (simplistically).

Using 2 filters gives you advantages of course. I habitually use 2 smaller filters on my 6x2x2's because I can clean one and not be too fussy about protecting my bacteria because there is enough in the other loop to take up the slack. It also gives me an insurance against a filter failure.

Using 1 big one with additional stages does not have the failure security advantage. It could also mean you are running filters which are basically doing little or nothing.

Your choice of course, I have no idea why you want to overfilter, you may have a perfectly legit reason.

one reason for more filtation HIGHER STOCK LEVELS 8)

if you think you are not feeding the filters enought when your fish are growing then add a little nutrafin cycle at water changes until your fish are big and producing a lot more waste

ok basically im not planning on anything biological in the ehiem pro 3 im gonna go to town with mechanical filtration on it then i have the problem of no bio filtration to break down various things ive had a look into bed filters and the one i have my eye on is good for uo to 1000 litre tank a 6x2x2 holds 680 more likley closer to 600 with gravel and fish etc so basically all i wanted to know was if anyone thought it would be ok inline as the pro 3 is a pressurised system(i tested it in a bucket and got very very wet) and it has some real kick behind it just wasnt sure if it would be to much for a bed filter that says it requires 150gph(ironicly 680 litres) pump

p.s. Lance76 thank you that was what i wanted to know :good:

yes it will work but what would be the point in wasting a 1700lph pro 3 just to run a sand bed filter you would have to slow the flow rate on the pro 3 so much or it will just pump sand right into the tank

i run my sand filter on a pro2 the big one with 3 trays and its still running on 3/4 speed

well ive got a pro 2 with 3trays if it comes to that ill experiment and c where i end up :)

it all depends on what fish you are going to keep

i would put the right media in the pro3 efimec and saubstrate pro

then put what you want in the pro3 as you are only realy using the pro2 as a pre filter for the sand filter

the sand filter needs to be pre filtered or it will suck in food and crap and will just turn into a crap filter

for me you can never have enought filtration until you run out of cabnet space

For you, that may work, for others it would be a disaster. On the information provided, some balance in the replies is necessary.
HIGHER STOCK LEVELS
Overstocking is always a disaster waiting to happen. Note my comment about using 2 smaller filters rather then one large train.

Well like you said each to their own :hey:

the ? at the start of the thread was to max out the filtration

and their is no disasters in my tank EVER it also stays fairly clean dont you think 8)

i dont have a cabinet i have an open steel frame stand i made it myself at work (stronger than any cabinet ever made) so i need to get the tank as well filtered as possible with a few filters as possible because they will be on show hence my idea of maybe running sand filter through pro 3

well like i said if you use the pro3 to run the sand filter it will be wasted as you will need to slow it down slower than a pro2

if you have a open base then just run the tank on 2 x pro3 they are a work of art and you will be proud to have 2 of them on show

sand filters are good but they are a dog to get started some times

the filters i have on my tank are over kill but i have a lot of messy fish in their including 3 x rays

my tank is bigger than a 6x2x2 but i think 2 x pro3 would be more than enought for a fairly heavy stocked tank then at a later date you can add the pond buckets like i have to add more mech filtration

the pro3 is a great filter and with 2 you wont need the sand filter

but hey what do i know the moderator must know best its his job to know
