Today I put one of my female angelfish back in my main tank. For 3 weeks shes been in a small 5gal container. I had spotted her swimming upside down and assumed she had a swim bladder problem. She was either upside down or lying flat on her side.

I took her out of the tank to isolate her, and left her for a few days to see if she would improve. She spent the whole time just lying flat on the bottom. I was in two minds whether to let her carry on like this or put her out of her misery. I'd tried feeding peas, bloodworms, daphnia but she ate nothing.

I had sent of for a medication (King British) for swim bladder disorders. It eventually turned up and I dosed it. & days later no improvement. I did a big water change and dosed again. This was a few days ago and I'd more or less given up on her improving when lo and behold today she was swimming upright. I waited a few hours and put her back in my main. She looked a bit unsteady for a while, but I was more worried about my other 3 angels rejecting her. Happily the 4 of them are swimming about together as was normal.

I'm not sure she's totally cured yet, time will tell. She has a pretty bad burn from the heater in the small tank. The fact that she didn't seem to be in pain was what stopped my from euthanising her. Plus the fact I was a bit squeamish.

A few hours later and she's swimming about quite the thing, and eating. You can see the burn mark on her side and for some reason here ventral fins have curled at the end. Maybe a fashion statement? At least I can tell the females apart now. I couldn't before. That's her mate top right in the pic, hes the biggest of my angels. Hopefully her troubles are now behind her.

Always nice when these stories have a happy ending.  Hopefully it stays that way.  Lovely tank too, btw.

Excellent! You diagnosed it right and treated it right. Now that she's eating I'm guessing she'll recover quite well.

I really hope so. TBH it wasn't that hard to diagnose. The fact she was swimming upside down was a bit of a giveaway. I never expected her to get better though. I'm really happy about that.

good that you managed to save her! Well done for giving her a chance and I'll have to remember the king british stuff works well if I ever have to deal with something similar :)

Is it just me or does it look like the angel second to the left has made a meal of one of your cardinals?hoping it is just the camera angle

glad to see your angel on the mend though!

Yeah it does look a bit like it. It is definitaly just the angle, all my cardinals are present and correct

Nice story - glad she made it. Some time ago now, It went the other way for me and my prized Angel male. I was upset and my daughter (now 18) said 'but it's just a fish'. But I remember how she sobbed when as a little girl, she lost her first fish.
It's a funny thing really. Some fish are just fish. But the ones you raise from little guys into big beautiful fish get to be real special. Like out here in the country, some farm dogs are just dogs, while ours is like another child to us.
