They only take their first breath, at the surface, at about 3 weeks of age. It takes that long for their Labyrinth organ to develop
Thats why its important to keep a good fitting lid on to keep the air temperature high. If the air temp is too cool when they take that first breath it can kill them.
Netty says, keep the water level at 6" till they are bigger
