Hey guys n girls.

I'm not a fish fanatic but know enough to keep happy fish, so happy i have about 30 baby red breast cichlids, if thats their 'nickname'.

They look like miniture tadpoles at the mo and im afraid my malawi will try to eat them, mum n dad are super protective but when they swim freely i feel they might get munched.

How can i protect it without upsetting my whole tank?

cheers

Grand ma of 30!

havent heard the name red breasted cichlids before.

you got a pic?

im hopin its an african cichlid cos otherwise it shouldnt be with the malawis anyway really.

jeeze went on net lookin as i dont know how to upload pics n theres 100's of cichlids

Until i find how to upload

they puff out (like the dinosaur in jurassic park) a big red 'mane' when tey are threatened or defending?

isnt that a firemouth? :/ im not sure because i hardly know anything about cichlids, but thats what i think it is.
edit:
im hopin its an african cichlid
erm, i just checked on the fish index and the firemouth is a central/south american cichlid, not an african. :/

yea thats a firemouth.

for the fry - anything big enough to eat them will probably have a go so if you want them to survive then youll have to move them to another tank or make sure theres a shedload of hiding places for them.

as for the malawis, they should be in a tank with only other malawis because of there aggression and prefferance for a much higher PH than other fish.

I can only assume its a malawi hes electric blue my mum bought him for me, he seems fine apart from at the moment as being warned off by mum n dad in the tank

ive got loads of plants for the fry to hide in but i feel its not enough, what can do with the fry? sell them or.....?

cheers

have to see if any of the shops will take them off you.

basically if you have spare tanks and the hardware to run them then get the fry into a new tank so there safe.

if you dont then jus leave them be and theyll get eaten by the other fish or even there parents.

a couple are bound to survive tho, they always find a way so you wont miss anything if ya dont keep them all.
