today i was at the vet with our dog bear, he had managed to cut his stopper pad in half! this is now the 3rd time we have had to take him there, he has now had 3 OPs in total, poor guy  well anyway when we took him there today....a guy came in with his dog, she looked real old and i noticed she was "cackling" was really odd, but then became apparant she was about to have a fit :( i felt like crying she looked so scared bless her, i might be a man but i sure ent made of stone and today has been such a hard day, i dont know what happened with her in the end...the vets rushed to her side along with the owner, she was dribbling and had wet herself, they ended up picking her up as she was fitting to move her into the vets room, im unsure how this would of ended as she did look very old :( im going to ask when we go next time to see how she did, i do hope she is ok  the fear in her eyes....i just wanted to help her :-(

That is so sad. I'm assuming she must have had some type of brain tumor maybe. Addisons? I try to take my own dogs (I have 5 GSD's) to the vet as little as possible. I had a Shepherd/Pitt mix named Bear for 14 years and lost him 2 years ago.

For your own dog, Next time he cuts his pad try soaking it in peroxied for a few minutes, then place his foot on a clean white towel. When it is dry use superglue to glue the pad. We put AD's (its a schutzhund title that involves a 12 mile run) on our dogs and that is what we do when they blow a pad out. Works extremely well for shallow cuts. Saves tons of $$ and the risk of your dog picking something up at the vets office!

ive no idea, i didnt speak with the owner, he came in and she just started to cackle then shake..wasnt nice, but

bear cut his stopper pad, its none of the bottom ones, its the one far up his leg, we live in a area with an ally at the bottom of the garden behind our fence, somebody had thrown some glass bottles over our fence, this is how he cut it the cut is a very deep one to the point that it had to be cut of as the inside of the pad was hanging out, we couldnt glue it if we tryed  the vet has cost over 300 already  but in our eyes we would do the same for any of the family members, the dog is a family member  priceless. if of course either dogs do cut there pads i will sure use your advice! but are you sure about gluing it? im abit sceptical about that one lol. sorry to hear about your dog bear :(

one last thing...what is addisons??

its a type of disease that causes tremors, lameness, vomiting amoung other signs. I don't blame you for being skeptical. I would be too except that is why you soak it in peroxide first to make sure it is clean :) it's like what doctors do now for facial cuts and the like.

It sounded like plain epilepsy, our border collie X Springer was epileptic and he had huge "fits" wet himselg etc and they (animals) are scared when they have had a fit cos they have no idea what went on, the only thing we can do is medicate, to lessen the amount and severity of fits, and stay as calm as possible and talk to them and stroke them to calm them down when the fit has subsided. I do wonder why they moved the dog as they always say never to move a "fitting" animal unless they would be likely to injure themselves.

As for soaking facial cuts with peroxide our doctors have never done that they wash it with an anti bacterial wash/salt water cos peroxide makes your face feel like its on fire. Im only saying cos i have to get cats off my greyhound, he never kills them just holds them in his mouth, and of course they fight back.

As for your dogs pad, get someone to teach you how to bandage cos trust me it does help sometimes, otherwise just bathe it in salt water as peroxide is toxic to dogs, as we got taught at uni and in vets when i questioned about it, and it might be an idea to get him insured as nowadays it doesnt cost too much to insure a dog, i pay about £9 for my greyhound considering he catches alot of cats lol

ok, well the vets that rushed over did stroke the dog and tryed to sooth her, it was the pets owner who picked her up to move her, however he was told to by the vet, we have decided to open an account with our vet and pay it into that instead, this way there is money there for any kind of emergency but i will talk to her about pet insurence as we have it on our 1 of our cats and the other dog, it just cost alot when you have a fair few pets lol thanks for all the tips guys! it has helped and we will be attempting a change on his dressing as funnily enough we went out and bought the stuff the vets used to dress it! at least we know what to clean it with to, its a pain as he keeps licking it and trying to get it of, getting him one of them lampshades (lol) does not work, he is now on his 3rd

Yeah we have always had that trouble with lampshades our puppy broke his leg at 12 weeks old and kept chewing vet wrap (coloured bandage vets use) and kept destroying lamp shade lol
The vets always told me that when my dog has any wounds to try and not let him lick/chew them (he has a habit of putting his whole foot in his mouth and chewing it stupid dog lol) all i did/do is call him by name and make a fuss when he leaves it alone, shouldnt take too long for it to start healing, also their mouth is actually very clean  cant see how when they lick their own ar*e lol good luck with him tho.

Just to let you know who we insure our pets with: tesco - previously, http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk/ - currently. Some will give you a discount for registering more than one pet with them and if you do it online you can save more money to as alot of sites give an online discount.

i would not recommend peroxide OR superglue on any animal, it burns to buggery! for a start peroxide is a BLEACH and i am quite sure RSPCA would like to prosecute anyone in the UK trying to use this method.

i have seen a cat fit, he was only a baby and stood on (cutting off oxygen causing fit) and it was horrible to watch. cant remember if he was clicking mind.

i used to be insured with healthy pets and they are excellent, very good cover, only £50 excess and quick to settle any claims.
