Asking About Other Fish Forums.

I wsa reading the recent question in the forum from someone asking whether there were any other good fish forums worth going to...
The reply from the moderator who dealt with that question was:

"No promoting of other competing sites either in the forum, chat room or private message system. In the event of receiving such spam messages, please report the incident to a member of the moderating team."

While I think the O/P's question is a little odd as a quick google search would have shown plenty of forums, I don't think this falls under 'promoting other sites'.
I'm willing to bet that William set this site up as a resource for people interested in keeping fish and wanting to learn more. In which case, if that means someone expanding their knowledge on another site, which may deal with a more specific area and therfore more likely to yield an answer to a specific question which cannot be answered here, then I don't see a problem - in fact I think this should be done more often. After all the inital idea of this site was to help people further their knowledge in fishkeeping regardless of address of the page they are reading from.
I find it a little closed minded to not allow anyone to ask about other fishforums. I known plenty of people on this site be recommended to go over to planetcatfish to get an ID for their fish - it doesn't mean they're not coming back. In fact quite the opposite...I'd be much more inclined to stay with a forum which was happy to point me in another direction, i.e. another forum, to get the answer I need than try and keep me here by not sharing that information.

It's one thing someone starting a thread stating they've started a fish forum and does anyone want to join - that would fall under promotion - but asking if there's is a specific marine forum or another decent forum that they can attend as well as this one is hardly promoting. I myself am a member of about 6-7 fish forums - and i still come over to here regularly.

I don't expect anything to be done with this, I just think the answer given to the OP was il-thought out and answering his question would be no bad thing...it's one more member who knows where to come next time he/she needs a question answering.

couldn't agree more. to me, its an "over reaction".

whether its true, or no, there is a smack of over moderation, here. and it seems to be hitting the, more, experienced members. the sheer number of posts, on modding subjects, atm, seems to indicate a problem. (or a perceived problem).

yes google would be the best way to find other forums.

what can goggle tell you about the quality of the forum, and its posts? Absolutely nothing! the best way to find a good forum is, ASK someone who knows it/them. where better to ask, than in a community of people who's views you trust?

There is another three forum's iam also joined too,i bet that 99.9% of the folk here are also joined to other forum's..Sometimes it helps because we can involve others to help, esp with the rarer and odd specie's that do appear from time to time, But we cannot say who and where were gathered the infomation, There has been a couple of times recently,where someone has posted a picture for a id and was led in the totally wrong direction,so with that and knowing it was'nt correct i took the picture to another forum where i know there is some specialist's in certain area's. Like tolak and his angel addiction, and nmonks and his brakish addiction, we all know where we can source infomation for what we want to specialise in, so with this in mind, i beleive this forum is great obviously i have been here a few years now, going to my other forums for certain infomation but always back here,because of the friendly forum where everyone knows each other,bit like the waltons and going down to that pub called "cheers" where everybody knows your name

This forums open to public without registrations so what's stopping the other sites copying your stuff? If they did then why didn't you bother copywrighting the material? if you did and theres no grounds to bother trying to get them done for copywright infringement then it's just this sites word against theres.
I use another site for all of the oddball/predatory stuff as it has loads more information than on here. I think if somone is needing more information and this site doesn't provide it then wheres the problem with them pointed elsewhere?
I still use this for some general stuff and the community but for the type of fish im into i go elsewhere.
