Arrowana's

Typos, and people with obvious disadvantages (such as English not being a first language or having a conditions such as dyslexia) are not jumped upon as that would be unreasonable.
What about people that put a 's' where it doesn't belong? Where do they stand?

Don't bash someone else's grammar unless your grammar is stellar.

P.S. I agree with the original poster... this forum is about fish, not grammar... if you don't understand what he is getting at (which you obviously did understand) tell him you don't understand or don't post at all!
Read the bold. Oh, and when referring to the letter one would usually say an 's' due to the way the letter is pronounced. ;)

As inferred, but obviously not clear enough for you, I do not have a problem with typos and the odd mistake, but rather people who take absolutely no care in their use of the written word.

Yes, I agree, one may use 'an' referring to a letter, but that doesn't make it proper English. Also, you would want to say a letter not the letter; believe it or not 's' is not the only letter in the alphabet... By the way, what is the difference between a typo and people who don't take care of the “written wordâ€￾? A typo is a mistake of the “written wordâ€￾ (electronically of course) so what would the difference be? Who sets the limits?

Trust me, I can go all day with sarcasm and grammar correction, you aren't perfect, I'm not perfect, neither is anyone else.

As long as a post is able to be read and makes sense then i dont see any problem with small mistakes in spelling and grammar, this is a fish hobbiests forum after all not an English grammar forum.

Now can this be dropped and get back onto the original sujbject, so if you dont have anything to add about arowanas then dont add anything at all please.

Okay, back onto subject, why exactly are the asian arrowanas banned in America?

They aren't banned, but they can only be traded with CITES documentation to prove that they are tank-bred. Wild fish are extremely vulnerable to extinction for a variety of reasons. It's exactly the same in the UK and Europe.

Cheers,

Neale

Scleropages formosus is indeed still illegal to import, trade or own within the United States

They are banned under the Washington Species Protection Act as they are a critically endangered species in the wild.

However since the ban was put into effect great efforts have been put into captive breeding and now they are farmed on such a scale that the lower rated types can be bought for as little as £100 where as a ten years ago if you were lucky enough to even see one it would cost thousands. All captive bred arowanas must be fitted with a microchip and come with a certificate from the farm they were bred at, without these it is illegal to sell any Asian arowana.
They are now quite readily available within Europe and Asia but America still has the ban in place, for what reasons i dont know.

Interesting... has the effort to save them helped? Are their numbers up?

They havent been captive bred to raise their wild numbers, they are bred purely to supply the aquarium trade and make money. In Asian customs they are seen as a sign of wealth and prosperity so comand high prices, the rarer the colour type the more they go for, it is not unknown for some morphs to swap hands for 5 figure sums. The ones we get in the UK and Europe are just the ones the Asians dont want

Wow, well i didnt know that!!!

Pipatic, the cheapest asian aro you can get is most probably the green, and it can be got for as little as £80-150 ish.
The real expensive grade 1 red are thousands....

About the jardini, you recommend a size of 6ft by 2ft, would 5ft by 2ft be acceptable or do they appreciate the extra room?
I personally think it would need to be 6ft long, and i also think that it should be a bit wider than 2ft, but people keep them with that width, so it should be ok with that, but not the length...

Aw, shucks... and I was having such fun watching the fireworks!

Squid -- thanks for the suggestion for my next Google search. Found it! Very amusing.

I liked especially "Make mine 568 ml!". I do actually go into Waitrose and ask for 454 grammes of whatever. They EU can take away a pound in weight... but it's memory lives on! Does that make me an überpedant?

Cheers,

Neale
