I have just set up my Rio 180 and put in some rather cold water that I left with the heater on overnight. I woke up and opened the lid to find a massive amount of condensation all over the lid and lighting unit. I had a little search on the web but I couldn't find anything saying that the lighting unit is ok with this or not, could someone please tell me if it is safe. At the moment it is not plugged into the mains and I am unsure whether to plug it back in or to dry it off first...

I've got a Juwel and my lid is always wet with condensation and water splashes. I don't worry about it, it's not designed to have a condensation tray in there so I'm guessing everything is water proof

Mine is the same. It's to be expected. You could add a condensation tray if youre concerned though.

There'll be an IP rating written somewhere on it, such as IP65 or such like.

First number is a degree of protection from solid objects, such as dust etc, second is for liquids, which is really the one you're interested in (the higher the better but less user friendly, totally sealed units would be IPx8, but you'd not be able to change the bulb), but it'll be fine I'm sure.

Thanks everyone, I thought I was just worrying over nothing but its always good to have some reassurance!

juwel units can still let condensation in hence how many units go faulty. I have. just opened mine up to find 2 patches of condensation so when i get a new ballast i am going to go extra mad with silicone.

Take the light unit off, dry it as much as you can... Take the bulbs out and let the white bulb holders dry out for at least over night.

The Juwel light units are splash proof not water proof, constant condensation is what destroys the light units eventually!

I have to test peoples ligh units all the time, seems to be a lot gone this past few weeks, seeing between 4 and 8 a week. 99% of them are knackered. I can tell easily, ifi take the bulb out and press the center of the white bulb clip a few times and if my fingers are damp from it, i know its knackered.

Bodging up a condensation tray is a brilliant idea. Its bloomin expensive if the light unit does go! For a £3 condensation tray to save you £100 odd for new light unit...

That's always happened with mine. Nothing to worry about :)
