Well Im going to trade in my 2 330 penguins for a canister filter but is it worth it, Im going to get 80 dollars for the filters. :)

what type of cansiter are you looking at buying?

Canister are better in biological filtration than internal filters. But I think you need still one internal filter to filter those small particles away. I use external (eg. Eheim 2028) and internal filters (e.g Eheim 2252). They works fine together. However, when I set up new tank, I definitely put HMF and internal filter too. Much cheaper, much more biological activities and easy to keep...

I have been running a magnum 350 for about a month now, which replaced my aquaclear 300. In the first hour of opperation, my tank was crystal clear... something that it had never been while using the AC. i've yet to open the thing up, because its running just fine... although today is cleaning day since the blue pad is full of chunks from the vacation feeder. I'd recommend my magnum 350. By the way, my tank is a heavily stocked 30 gallon tank. If you have the cash, go for the eheim pro model. From what i've read and seen, its by far the best of the canisters.

one more thing about my magnum... From what i've noticed, you have to really place the canister on the base just right, or the impeller will vibrate and be annoying. Also, the base gives off a little bit of heat, so i've had to slightly adjust my heater.

I run a fluval 303 and have never had any problems with it keeping the water crystal clear for me. My favorite LFS pushes Eheims, but I got the fluval for a great price (free), and it is the best that I have even owned in regards to filters. I have a 330 penguin and a aquaclear 300 sitting in a box now since I have the 303.

I use an eheim classic external canister filter on my 120g and it is really great, can handle incredible bioload and is dead silent unless i have the outtake above water. It is a hassle to open it up, but I think that just comes with the territory...
