Hi all ive reacently got some small silver sharks and i think that they have been nipping at my black widow tetras tails. i was just wondering wether they have been known to do this with other species as well. In addition i think my tank is too small for them (60 litre) from what ive heard so could this be apart of it.

Hi welcome to the forum :)

Ive not heard of Balas being nippy but can imagine it as they are schooling fish so are used to creating a hierachy - but yes 60cm tank is too small for them long term.

Hi, i have kept bala sharks, they arent fin nippers, I have also got black widow tetras and they will nip at each others fins, as wills said- to form a heirachy.

Hi cableguy, as said above they are not fin nippers, they keep any nipping to them selves. They are peaceful fish but very skitish, dont like any movement in front of the tank and regularly try and jump from the tank if there is alot of movement near the tank. Unfortunately 60 litres is far to small for these shoaling fish, they get very big (roughly 30cm) are fast swimmers and as I have said skittish. I had them in a 450 litre (5 foot) tank at 1 point and they grew to big for that. Still at least its an excuse to upgrade and buy a bigger tank lol.

thank for your help and a quick question will they be better off in a bigger group like 4

Welcome to the forum!

If you've only got a few of them now, they are shoalers and should be in groups of 6 minimum and they get over a foot long so really need tanks 100G and up.
