Aquatics Place I Won't Be Returning To!

I have been to Golls a few times. Most of my fish come from there, I have never had an ill one. I take my Mollies there for rehoming as I have a never-ending supply. I once took a deformed one by accident and was worried. I phoned up and said I would come and collect it as I didn't want it to be a feeder fish (assuming nobody would buy a deformed one). I was told very severely that it is illegal to feed live fish and that in fact they would have simply kept it until the end of it's natural life. They are also signed up to the no dyed fish campaign. I find Golls to be quite good. He also has a book of L number Plecos and he told me he can order them on request (subject to availabilty). He doesn't have a display of large tanks but he can order them if you ask. The large brick and glass tank used to hold an enormous Red Tailed Catfish and it was plenty big enough (the tank). He also has outdoor fish in another room and they look perfectly healthy. As to the snail eggs on plants I think you will find that is fairly usual. If you don't have a fish that eats snails simply rinse the plants. He also has a range of dried and frozen fish food and other aquarium products. Sorry if I sound like an advert! Just wanted to say I find Golls quite good so I suggest you go and look and make your own mind up. :)

Well I really hope that when i went it was a one off as i had tears in my eyes when i left there!

I think the Betta's upset me the most because they were just so still and they looked in awful condition. Really unhappy.

Its not like I have just come on here and told you all what i saw, i actually uploaded photo's!

I really hope that when someone else off this site goes there this week that they believe its improved because this will make me feel alot better for the fish, but i will never buy from there regardless.

have you been in to a pets at home the bettas tanks are smaller in Pets and we have established that the blow hetaer is in fact absolutly fine for maintaing the ambiant room temperature to keep the tanks warm as it is a fish room

I went into Pets at Home yesterday and I have to say it was better than Golls!

I don't actually rate Pets at Home but honestly all the fish had colour and looked happy. They had a Betta in a heated tank.

I didn't mention the blow heater again? The Betta's did look horrible whether the blow heater is ok or not.

As I mentioned before, I'm going to Golls Sat morning, need a couple of bits, will have a good look.

If you visit a LFS & are in any way unhappy with the conditions I would urge you to report it your local athority, do not just walk out & go elsewhere.

In the UK, the 1953 Pets Act requires pet shops to meet some very stringent criteria, including suitable accomodation, feeding and treatment of any illness or infection. Enforcement of the act lies with the local authority who have the power to immediately close any shop & to prosecute the owners.

I recently had cause to complain about my local Pets At Home & within a week there was massive improvement in conditions at the shop. If every fish lover complained we could easily run all these cowboy outfits out of business & a far fewer fish would suffer.

Well like I said I would, I paid a visit to Golls sat morning. I think that maybe something has been said or they have read the comments on here. Healthy fish, clean tanks, the large puffer was still under med, but it was clearly marked up on the tank, when it was last treated and with what. There was a young guy who was cleaning and dealing with customers, very helpfull and didn't stop working all the time I was there. After the comments made on this forum, I did walk in with trepidation, but came out, thinking there has been a great deal of effort put in to improve. If I was ever in the market for some new fish, I would give Golls a try again. :good:

Well I am glad to hear it then, may have been to do with the fact that I contacted them direct and had a little moan.

All the fish must be happier now :good: Was worth me putting the effort in :)
