I'm autistic as well, I cycled my tank from scratch and am seeding another 2 from it, and even just the noise at night is calming.
My fish and my Guinea pigs are the most calming things for me.
Fish dying I can cope with now. The first one's I couldn't deal with

I have 2 young autistic children. I can say this, they love it. In fact, my youngest, I have a 30 gallon in his room. He stares at it while he is calming down.

I will say this, if your like my kids, I suggest getting some help to get the tank cycled. I get frustrated and I dont have autism, and seeing how my kids temperament is, if your anywhere near what they are like... get a helping hand.
I have Aspbergers which is a high functioning ASD and I have been doing everything with my 29 gallon. The most frustrating thing is having my whole tank die of an ammonia spike.

My younger cousin has Aspbergers.. her seing my tank has resulted in her brother setting up his own tank for her to spend more time with. Says it all really.

Terry.

Me and my boyfriend literally spent an hour tonight just lying there talking and watching my fish :)

Aww her brother is sweet

My fish always make me open up my heart when I see them. Fish have magical powers. If you think about it they have always been there throughout history and affected civilization. The other day I learned that upside down catfish have been found in egyptian art.

I can't even imagine my life without my tank
Me neither. I can't live without the water changes, morning feeding of fish, watching the little guys playing around... It's been 15 years since I got my first community tank, that's quite a big chunk of my lifetime along fishes.

I changed the substrate so I am waiting a few weeks so everything is cycled before adding fish.

That would have saved me some part of the water bill if only I knew, but even if I knew about fishless cycling on time, what are the odds that my mom would want an ammonia-filled tank that moves your nose away until it cycles?
Then again I didn't have internet back in 97 nor any aquarists to learn from. I just got a bunch of fish dumped on me by my friend, because she was leaving the country to work outside and couldn't take the fish with her, and being a kid, I knew no better.

I am going to give my best guess here Platy lover. Fish are not demanding. I think it is really that simple. If I am a person who has trouble with interactions, as I am, I can simply look at my fish and enjoy them for what they are. Nobody demands anything from me at all for paying attention to them. I am also borderline autistic by today's standards BTW. In my own experience the fish give me far more than they ask of me. I take what are seemingly easy actions and the fish reward me with their beauty and with good health. I can even go a bit further by helping people in places like this without needing to confront anyone face to face. That gives me a bit of satisfaction in doing something worthwhile that is within my abilities to accomplish. I find that terribly difficult to do in other pursuits.
