so guys, are there any easy to find, reliable 'natural sources of ammonia?

any help would be great

and alos another thing ive wondered, do u have to add the bacteria to begin cycling, or does it grow out of knowere?

any help would be great

cheers :D :)

I'm going to assume this is for a fishless cycle. Some people add fish food to the tank instead of ammonia, it will decompose and one of the products is ammonia, but it takes a while to break down. Some people pee in their tank. Read the thread before you do this.

The nitrifying bacteria you want grow everywhere, you don't need to add any to your tank because they will already be there in small amounts. It is beneficial if you can get some gravel, filter media or a decoration from an established tank as this will speed things up. Make sure the established tank doesn't have problems with disease first.

lol yes its a fishless cycle,

i mite just try the fish food thing, because i cant get my hands on clear ammonia anywere,

and er lol i dont think i will be peeing in my tank.
does anyone know hiw long the fish food method takes to cycle, or atleast break down and form ammonia?

any feedback would be greatly appreciated

aye. I posted on your other post in the begginners section

o ok thanx for that chishnfips, so it should take around 2 weeks for the food to turn into ammonia?

ok, any more suggestions from people out there?

it took two weeks to do the entire cycle, not just to break the food down. I also added some bacterial cycle stuff. you can use stress zyme aswell to help it on its way.

Sean, where in the world are you based ?

ahh Thanks - sorry can't help you then :(

fish food might be the way to go then.

hey bloozoo,

i live in perth, Australia
if you want a quicker method... i use fresh prawn.....peel off the shell and dump in one a day for the first 4 days.....

I did my cycling this way a with completely new equipments.....

my cycling was completed in 1 and a half week......

the con is the water will be quite cloudy afterr 1 week..... and a bit of smell...not too strong though..... then you know you tank is cycled onc eyou see the water clears up....

do a 50% water change, and you are ready to go!!!

oh yah.... mine is a 4 X 1 X 1 tank..... if yours is bigger it may take a longer time

wow its that simple?

chuck a raw prawn in, and once the waters cleared, its cycled

im surprised we dont all use this method

neway

thanx for all the advice :)
