Another Dead Fish

i just tried to buy 4 and it added £4.99 postage??!!

Sorry, are you just after test tubes?

First thing that comes up on an eBay search for test tubes is about twenty for a few quid:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-20ml-Plastic-test-tubes-150-x16mm-Caps-Shots-/150709842627?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_Supplies_ET&hash=item231701b2c3

Then just use a plastic 5ml syringe to get tank water out. Chemists or even vets might just give you one.

1: they are rounded bottoms (like some men i know :p)
2: i dont want plastic..they will stain ( like some men i know)

So just hold it? Plastic only stains if you don't rinse them properly, even my glass ones stained when I forgot to rinse one for weeks.

And at that price for twenty, if they do stain, chuck em.

I wouldn't pay over a tenner for some test tubes, delivered! Up to you I suppose.

£4.99 postage!! That's criminal ... thinking twice now. When it said the price it led me to believe that included the postage aswell.
Back to searching I guess then. I can get other test tubes but I'd like the proper API ones as they have the line on so I know it's an accurate result

Hence potential freebie from vet or chemist in the form of a syringe. If not free, dirt cheap, and very accurate.

I have a syringe ... okay, I need to go and have another look on amazon and ebay... but possibly tomorrow now, starting to feel a bit too achy to care about test tubes today.

Thanks guys :)

know the feeling....when i'm rinsing out 16 test tubes every morning.

P@H had an offer on PH test kit today so I got one (just for the test tube :p) cost me £7.45. Figured I'll use the spare bottle of PH test at some point anyway. I'll still keep eyes open online to replace the other 3 :)

£8 for one ph test and a tube? crazy, like i said, ebay has the full freshwater test kit for £18 delivered :/

I would suggest you take Tizer's advice and just buy another whole kit. You will need the stuff eventually and it doesn't expire that fast. It would be a worth while investment and more cost effective than buying them individually.

As far as less energy consuming water changes go, I've developed my own system.

I have a really big bucket - about 25 litres. I use a syphon to transfer water to the bucket from the tank, cleaning the substrate and sucking up snails as I go. Then I use a garden hose and a small pump to empty the water from the bucket to the sink. It's the whole length of the hose away (20m?) and slightly up-hill so a python won't work. When the bucket is nearly empty I start syphoning again. Two goes gives me about 45 litre change - 25% in my 180l.

This process means I can return anything I didn't want to suck up back to the tank - mainly sand but I have sucked up some fry, which did survive. I then attach the hose to the cold tap and run it until the water is cold = clean.

I empty and clean the bucket at the sink as it only has a little water in at this point. I either use the hose to fill the tank directly (in summer!) or fill the bucket with the hose and a jug from the hot tap and use the pump, or use a smaller bucket filled with warm water from the sink to refill the tank.

It's a bit of a faff but I don't get water on the carpet!
Cathy

i just syphon into 2x 15L buckets (50% of my tanks) empty the buckets in the kitchen sink..refil them with temp matched water and add the dose of dechlor into the first bucket, pour back in the tank gently with a 2.5L jug, lid back on...bob's your uncle.... :good:
