I am planinng a Discus tank...with a sand bottom in a 220 gallon tank......i want 6-8 discus and 6-8 angles, i was informed that angels carry a sickness or parasite that kills discus...how can i combat this...can i make this tank happen are is it worthless...

How long should i prepare the tank, how many months (i know discus need really clean and well filtered water ..and a UV filter is a must!)...

can i use the fishless cycle method?...

and should i introduce other fish first?.. before the discus (i also want rainbow fish...a blue and a gold gorumai and 2-4 kissers)

Rainbowfish will be too active for the Discus and will stress them out. I wouldn't mix Angels and Discus due to the feeding habbits of Angels, though in a large tank it could work, still i wouldn't, I would keep just Discus.

The tank needs to be well cycled before adding Discus, fishless cycle, then add some suitable tank mates first. The discus should be the last fish you add.

A UV filter is not needed. Clean water is a must, but you also need to consider its chemistry, match the water of your discus supplier. Search on here for more info on the requirements of Discus and suitable tank mates.

I'm not sure if the Gouramis would be suitable either...

angels and discus is a bad idea most of the time unfortunately

angels are susceptible to diseases which are relativley minor and easily treatable for them, can be a major problem for discus. :/

now that's not to say you can't keep them together, but only do if youre very confident of the quality of the livestock you are getting, a slightly weak angel (of which there are many due to inbreeding to get all the colour strains we see nowadays) can cause havoc to your prize discus.

:/

Have to disagree.

In the average tank I would say no to mixing discus and angels, but 220 Galls is not normal! I think that many would be fine and its not as if theres many going in there.

If you worm them first with wormer plusor flubenol 15 you shouldn't have any problem with internal parasites from either the angels or the discus.

I would not add rainbows not because they will stress the discus out, which I dont think the will, its because they prefer harder water compared to angels and discus. Go for a biotope setup instead :)

By "biotope " you mean??? ...

and if rainbow fish are not suitable for discus, then...what are other good mates for discus... i also want some spiny eels..so i didn't won't any fish under 3" at max size...

Fish from one specific area

I wouldn't suggest spiny eels and discus, they like different water from what I have just googled on the and they might be a little too aggressive for discus.

tetras
neons
some plecs
b/n
some corys - only ones that like warmer waters.

theres lots, might be best to do loads of research on discus and then have a look at to what is suitable to mix with them, the main problem with getting fish for a discus tank is the temperature

Cardinals make good tank mates and they can tollerate the warmer water Rummynose are also ok with discus.
