I could look into crypts... How should I measure the substrate depth in my tank?

Tape measure, outside of tank...keep in mind, the bottom glass is raised a bit from the surface of your tank stand

Ok. I measured it and it is apx 1-1 1/2 inches of substrate maybe... I dont know where to start measuring sense the rest of the sand is hid by the rim...

I keep amazon swords as well but I don't use fertilizers. They just do fine over here... And they reproduce new plants as well.

20 gallon high. In inches the tank measures (L×H×W) 24×16×12

Thats great to hear! Im getting ready to battle the blue green algae in my tank by turning off the lights in the tank for a while because the java ferns are getting brown spots and small holes

I thought about that, I just dont wanna stick a random object into the tank

Or your finger, and mark the top of the substrate with your thumb nail against the finger.
