Ive noticed my 5 shrimp are behaving very strange at the minute and im after some advice.

I got some plants today from P@H along with a male beta for my 46l fluval edge and ever since both have been in the shrimp are swimming about like crazy, trying to get to the top of the tank and then getting tired and just floating down to the bottom where they will lay on their backs for 10 minutes or so and then start going crazy before doing it all again.

They have never done it before when I have got new fish or plants and Ive never seen them do this before. They regularly climb the plants to the top and down again but never like this.

any ideas would be helpful

thanks

Have you done a water test? It could be related to high Ammonia, Nitrite (both lethal) or possibly high nitrate.

The plants may have traces of copper on them from fertiliser or snail killer. Copper will kill the shrimp as they can't tolerate it. Could you put the plants in an other tank for a while till your sure they are chemical free? also do the usual like said by alistairw and check your water stats as they are quite sensitive to bad water and a good indication that somthings wrong.

It was copper im sure of it, all 5 have died this morning

Im so pissed off about it, been on the phone to P@H this morning telling them I said 3 or 4 times I had shrimp in the tank. They are claiming they dont treat any of the plants in their stone but have offered to compensate me the cost of the shrimp.

So annoyed, its not about compensations. Ive lost 5 perfectly healthy shrimp and chances are someone else will as well.

yeah, good catch, i feel.
copper is most likely the cause!!!! especially from P@H

Well the semi good news is when I went to get them out 2 are still alive so Ive took the plants out and done a 50% water change. They are clearly struggling but I dont know what to do, had a read on some other forums and people have said they have got a few better by just doing big water changes for the next few days.

Went to P@H today and they have taken full responsibility and gave me a gift card!!! I told them several times that it wasn't about any compensation it was so it didn't happen again to other people and to make sure they let other shops know (the guy didnt even know that copper has any effect towards shrimp!). God I hate that place

Hopefully the other 2 pull though, does anyone know of a test kit that tests for copper levels?
