well this is my first summer keeping tropical fish, ive switched my heaters off yet my tanks are all still too hot. my biggest tank is approaching 30C and my other two are 27-28C. ive heard some conflicting things about temperature and nothing certain.

some have said this hot temperature can kill some fish, surely wild fish in tropical locations go through hotter temperatures than this in their summers? should i be trying to cool it? i dont wanna just put icepacks in so the temp goes up and down a lot as i would say that would be more stressful than the heat. so, how should i cool it? or should i just let them 'sweat it out' ?

thanks.

All of the fish in your list will be just fine. You might want to increase the airation. Does your filter break the water surface, or do you have an air stone?

yes, both, and ive angled the filter outlet a little higher to create a bit more surface movement.

thanks for the reassurance :)

is the tank exposed to direct sunlight?

i lost three fish yesterday to heat 1 tiger barb and 2 zebra danios

im just keeping my windows open in my room and pulling down the blind, it keeps the tank relitivly cool and if it gets a little hot i fill an empty fish food pot or two cuz the plastic is safe for fish as it stores there food with ice and drop them in afor a little whilsed

I have just lost my male golden ram! :( Water stats, filter, oxygenater all fine so I can only imagine it's due to yesterdays weather 28 degrees at 6pm when I left for work!
Not a happy bunny

oh my i hadn't even thought of that :X :X just checked mine & they are all warm as well. would turning the lights of help any ??? i've got all my windows open but the curtains shut to try & keep the heat of the room

Turning the lights off will help as will leaving the lid open to allow evaporation (natures aircon) maybe even pointing a fan to blow accross the surface of the water if the temp rise is serious. You could also fill a pop bottle with cold water and float it in the tank to help reduce the temp gradually.

Most fish should be able to survive temps of 82 for a while anyway, infact it's recommended as part of the treatment for whitespot, but as has already been said, make sure the tank is well airated too :)

Well last year all my tanks pushed 90 F (33C) for a few weeks - non stop. Obviously slightly dropping at night, but I was probably very lucky not losing any fish. Those rooms in the house are just very hot unfortunately :/

I don't bother switching my heaters off as they are on auto thermostats anyway. I just leave my windows open and use a fan in the rooms. I can't even take my lids off as I have a clumsy cat who will either jump right into the tank (not realising there is no lid) or try and drink from it, or try and catch the fish (yeah, he did that once before :X ).

I was also wondering about this, the room my tank is in felt like a million degrees yesterday......

Anyway iv got all my windoes open and light off and it seems to be ok, as in stays around 27, never thought of the fan idea but might use that one. I like the idea of a bottle of cold water as well, never would of thought of that

My room is really small and on the "sunny" side. I have my 30" tank near the window aswell and the room usually reaches around 25 C which is crap for me as i can't sleep properly but my tank temperature is spot on 26 C all the time. So i'm beginning to wonder how hot your rooms must be that accomodate the tanks!

hmm my coldwater tank is reaching 22c at the moment which is a bit worrying cos i am supposed to have nit between 14-18, my tropical tank is just fine, i have had to turn the heater down a couple of degrees to compensate but it seem to be staying steady at 26c
