Advice Needed Tropical Fish

Sounds like you're on the right track.  Just a few suggestions below:

Hi,

Ive recently got a new tank of about 85 L..at the moment I have :

- 6 neon tetras - great.  I'd get a few more, like TallTree said.
- 2 female guppies - guppies like to school, so you might want to get a few more.  However, it's not absolutely necessary.
- 1 male betta - you might want to consider a female, as they tend to be less aggressive than males.  However, I don't have a lot of experience with betas in community tanks, so it sounds like you're doing just fine.
- 4 angel fish - you should get rid of the angel fish.  Those are way too many for your tank; I understand that you need 30 gallons of water per fish.  However, I'm not an angel fish keeper.
- 2 rummy nose tetras - sound good; rummy nose tetras stay small (2") so they should be fine for your tank.

I am going to give away or sell a couple of the angel fish,as I would really like a couple of discus in my tank, and would like to breed the guppies at one point but the male always seems to die. - as said before, discus are way too big for your tank.  As much as you like them, I'd give them up for their wellbeing.

What do you think? Or any suggestions for really colourful little fish.

Thanks
So the stocking levels that I would recommend are:
(I do 1" of fish per gallon of water)

8-10 neon tetras (1") = about 8"
4-5 guppies (1.5") = about 6"
5-6 Corys (2-4", depending on species) = about 15"
Total = 25 - 30"
This could get a little overstocked, but there are some things that I was really general about (the amount of fish) so you can play with the numbers.

Wow great answers thank you so much.Going to head down to my fish store and exchange my angelfish for some neons and guppies.Any advise on loaches?and dwarf gouramis? thanks

I haven't had any experience with loaches, but I know that some people say that dwarf gouramis are aggressive (they're in the same family as bettas).  I kept 2 of them in a community tank with no problems, but other people seem to have experienced aggression.

The only loach id reccomend for your tanks a kuhli loach. Make sure to get at least 6 so they're out and about more. :)

The 1 inch rule doesn't apply to small fish like neons. A 20 gallon can easily support more than 10 neons and a couple of guppies. Probably about 30+ neons, but you shouldn't max out the capacity. A shoal of neons and rummys would be fine in my opinion (except that rummys are for more experienced fish keepers).

30 + ! Not even remotely true unless filtration is the ultimate whirlpool. However small a fish it still poops. I wouldn't put any more than 15 in a 20 gallon. Plus some bottom dwellers and a gourami, :)

I always thought the 1" rule was specifically about small fish. You wouldn't put a single 6" fish in a 6G tank for instance but you might put 6 x 1" fish in.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you completely. Whilst I don't think the 1" / gallon rule is much use, it is specifically aimed at these type of fish. 30+ neons would be too much in an 85l tank.

Yes, I agree.  I go with 1" per gallon for fish under 6".  Sorry if I steered anyone wrong with my 1" per gallon rule :)

The inch rules barely applies to any fish, all fish are different and require different things. I have a khuli loach about 3 inches in length in a 10 gallon, that would mean I can only have 3 of them which is absurd. You should never use it when stocking any tank. Things that need to be considered (amongst other things like water temperature) are the amount of oxygen they use (how active they are and how big their gills are), how much waste they produce, what available space they take up (where they hang out) and of course how big they grow which is why should always compare adult sized fish. A small tetra such as an ember or a neon has poops about 1-2mm big, if that, - a tiny amount compared to a gourami or any larger fish. My gourami did poops as long as a neon, even longer sometimes, i was quite astonished. The amount of oxygen they use up is also small when you compare these things to most larger fish. A fancy/fantail goldfish, in comparison produces poops about 1 inch or more in length, and many more times thickness. And the amount of space they require to swim about is huge, at least 3 foot. In a 20 gallon with all these things in mind 30 neons would take up about 90% of the space, theoretically allowing for more fish. But this would mean your tank had no decorations, gravel etc... Plus I said you shouldn't max out the capacity, for these reasons. The more fish you have the more you will have to change the water, if you can stay on top of that there is no reason why you can't have a larger shoal. Plants also help to deal with the nitrate so a good plant setup would also help. My shoal of tetras seem very happy, but I constantly care for them, check for any plant matter that needs removing etc...and change 30% of their water 1-2 times a week when required. If you don't have time to do these things then you either need a much smaller shoal (which is bad for the fish), choose a different type of fish or  pick another hobby.

Hello again,

Ive rehomed all the angelfish, very saddly! but hope they will go to better homes,

So I now have :

3 female guppies

1 male guppy

6 neon tetras

4 black neon tetras

4 rummy nose tetras

1 betta

Is this a better setup? or what more or less?

oh..and also would like to add a dwarf gourami, but not sure just yet, what do you think?

I would watch the betta VERY closely and if he even tries to nip the guppies remove him immediately. The tetras all needs shoals of 6. The guppies will breed a lot. The gourami and betta will probably fight.

Except that not one point you made is true. The inch per gallon rule is quite useful when used correctly but mostly we have to use our brains and TFF to get stocking correct. Bottom line is 30 neons in a 20 gallon is too much.
