Hi,

Ive recently got a new tank of about 85 L..at the moment I have :

- 6 neon tetras
- 2 female guppies
- 1 male betta
- 4 angel fish
- 2 rummy nose tetras

I am going to give away or sell a couple of the angel fish,as I would really like a couple of discus in my tank, and would like to breed the guppies at one point but the male always seems to die.

What do you think? Or any suggestions for really colourful little fish.

Thanks

Please rehome all of the angels, they are too big for an 85l tank, as would be discus.

Your problem with male guppies dying may well be due to the betta. They aren't the sharpest tool in the box, and often mistake male guppies (with their long flowing tails) as another betta, and try to kill them.

It would be ideal to increase the shoal of rummynose to 6. Since the rummynose are relatively big, I would say that's about as much as you can get in an 85l tank.

First off, welcome to the forum!
:hi:
I'll run through your sticki for you :) :

- 6 neon tetras- these are good. I'd get 2-3 more tbh
- 2 female guppies - these are good too,
- 1 male - this is good, just keep an eye that he doesn't nip the guppies
- 4 angel fish- sorry but these fish should all be rehomed
- 2 rummy nose tetras- I would rehome these or the neons. Your tank doesn't have room to support 2 good sized schools.

Discus get very large and I wouldn't reccomend them for your tank, they will be unhappy and will eat your other fish. I would rehome the angels and rummynose and get 3 more neons, :) good luck!

I would have to agree with both of these guys posts the discus are far to big of a fish for a tank that size and so are angels.

Hi,

thank you for the answers,I have another same capacity tank out back, would it still not be possible to have a couple of discus in that  tank alone? or is it still to small?

Discus are schooling fish so need large numbers, they get to dinner plate size. I'd think a 100 gallon would be the minimum size.

Recommend min size for discus is 200L

I once had a betta with angel fish and the angels ate off the betta's fins so he ended up looking like a blue apple core! Happened overnight when I couldn't put a stop to it - so not a good combo imo - tank size not withstanding!
I love your signature duck, techen! lol

Plain and simple no, I'm afraid, as others have said, you need a muh larger tank for discus.

Everyone loves abit of duck now and then :p

Guys, keep this thread on-topic, please. We don't want to put the new member off the forum by thinking we're all obsessed with ducks, now, do we?

Tamii, please ignore these last 3 posts, they're actually quite knowledgeable fishkeepers. Honest.

You're right TLM. I'm sorry. :)
In my defense, mamashack started it ;) .
Anyway, I'll stop talking bout ducks. Onto snails....... < kidding>
bottom line is:

Personally in a tank that size I'd go for 6-8 neons or rummy nose tetras and 5 Corys. Then I'd go for the Betta OR guppies but not both together. If you go for guppies, try 1 male and 3-4 females. If you go for the Betta, add 1-2 extra Corys or neons/rummy noses.
