I had an ammonia problem a couple of weeks ago and by doing daily water changes etc i got rid of both nitrite and ammonia.

Now as of today there back again
ph=7.5
ammonia=1.2
nitrite=0.3
nitrate=5

I have a fluval 2+ in the aquarium at the moment would it help adding another filter as i have a fluval 1 i could put in if it will help?

i would appreciate any help in what to do
thanks

no didn't cycle it before adding fish in it. but it should have cycled by now as it has been set up for 2-3 months now.

it is overstocked a bit, waiting for other tank to cycle, do you think this could be the problem and would adding the fluval 1 help control bioload???

already done one 2 weeks ago i had to do daily water changes for about a week to get to 0. so why is it happened again and how do i stop it happening again??

you should be doing a water change more than once every 2 weeks (atleast once a week) but maybe you should do one every other day for a week or so...
you will see the ammonia level drop and the nitrite go up and then back down when the bacteria processes it in to nitrate
its all about how much bacteria youve got in your tank

when you clean your filter you diddnt clean it in clean water did you?

sorry i meant i have done a water change today already.
i do 20-30% water changes every week

and filter has never been cleaned in tap water always cleaned in water from aquarium!

i dont really no tbh, maybe someone else might no but ammonia is produced from fish waste so you dont have enough bacteria in the tank to cope with the amount of ammonia..
im fairly new to all of this too so im still learning also.. :)

All I can say is to keep doing water changes.

I had slight issues with ammonia to begin with but for a period of around 1 month, I did daily/every two day water changes to manage my readings down.

I use water conditioners which some say do or do not help but does not do any harm.

Keep the water changes regular, maybe do 40% daily for 5 days then drop to 30% for two and then 20% for a week? thats what I did and my readings are spot on now.

Even now I carry out 30% water changes twice a week after my nitrite level went up again very slightly.

Not sure how you do you water changes but before you do one oyu might want to wash out or the fish's poo to help the overload the bacteria has to do.
