Abandoned Betta!

I checked him out yesterday afternoon before I left. He's a beauty. A little blue on the head and the rest of him a deep red. He's also a double-tail. He seemed to enjoy having some attention. He swam back and forth in the front of the tank for a long time when I turned the light on. They (the other ladies in her office) had been feeding him a straight diet of freeze-dried bloodworms, so I brought in betta pellets and told them to lay off the bloodworms.

The bad news is I think he has finrot. I need a little help here. Looks like a little black all along the edges and starting to curl slightly. I haven't experienced it so I am not sure. I have maracide and aquarium salt at home I can bring in tomorrow. If anyone has any other suggestions, I can pick something up on the way home tonight. (There isn't a lfs nearby or I'd go out at lunch today). I brought declorinator in today to do a water change. Should I wait until I have the meds tomorrow to do the water change? There seems to be an undergravel filter in the tank and the water is fairly clear. There is no heater on the tank, but I turned the light on to raise his temp a little. There is no thermometer in the tank but the water felt cold to me.

The good news is he is active and tore into the betta pellets I gave him this morning. I just met him and I'm already in love.

Sorry, can't do pictures in the building without special permission and a lot of red tape. We develop ACT and SAT tests for blind high school students that are under strict government regulations and have a lot of research and development prototypes around that we do not have copywrights on yet. It's the one thing they are pretty strict about. :dunno:

First what you should do is for sure give him a water change - he's getting finrot from the water not being changed.
Give him a pinch of salt in there, too.
The clean water and salt SHOULD be enough to help his finrot, but you'll probably have to do water changes every other day or so.

How lucky that you found him!

Thanks Betta Momma, I'll do a water change at lunch time. I forgot the aquarium salt (I do good to walk at 5:00am :S ) so my hubby is bringing it.

 The people I work with are really good folks (not counting the Betta abandoner!) The head of cleaning services just brought me a brand new bucket to use for the water change. He had heard I was looking for something to do it with. Now that more of them know about the little fellow, they are concerned about him, too.

Isn't it sweet how people care?
That has been happening with lucky here at the office, too.
Folks stop by all the time to see him! :)

Water change with salt completed. He was swimming around pretty good when I left. I think the poor little thing is lonely. I am having a hard time not naming him, but I don't want to get my hopes up just yet.

Call him Phoenix (risen from the dead) if he makes it!

if i was you id take him and never ever give him back! And if the woman came back id geve her a piece of my mind :D On the brigh side now he has an owner who will love and care fopr him properly and NOT just DUMP him whenever they feel like it!well dont for rescuing him

The only reason I haven't brought him down to my desk, is that I don't want anyone to think I'm stealing from her. She still has other personal possesions she hasn't picked up yet. We only keep them for so long and then we send a letter to the person telling them their belongings will be discarded after a certain date. That is what I am waiting for. It won't take too long, because they will have to hire someone soon for her job and will need to clean out her office. I can be patient a little longer. In the meantime, I can visit Phoenix several times a day and make sure he is taken care of.

oh what an excellent story! it's so nice to read about people who care!!
