A Spawing Newbie's Spawn Diary

Day 4

No bubblenest again today. I figured as much. I have a birthing net for live bearers that is fairly large and hangs on the side of the tank. I think I'll try this next...you know that whole water flow thing.

Wish me luck!!!! :D

Theres also the method of putting another male near/in the tank in a vase or something so the two males can see each other, apparently that can make the male bubblenest too :dunno:

I swear, Allie is a homosexual--which is fine, just makes breeding difficult! Oh man, now how I get little babies? Maybe he'll offer to be a sperm donor anyway??? :dunno:

Day 5:

Yay, we have some bubbles!!! :kana:

Not many, but some is better than none!!!! :kana:

I've checked back over your post, and I seem to have missed if you said how old Allie is. If he's much over a year old, he might just have trouble finding the energy to really put his all into a bubble nest; they tend to slow down a bit after they pass the 12 month mark.

Eagerly awaiting an update!

Hehehehe....

Andie-- from what I was told, he is around 8-9 months. Possibly + or - some, but not older than a year. I honestly think he is just not interested though. I haven't given up yet, but I think if none of those things Wuv told me work, I'm going to call it quits for a while. Give them some time to relax.

good thinking I would condition them again for a further 2 weeks and when I breed bettas I wait till its autum or coming winter because when it rains it urges bettas to breed and build bubblenests so I have to wait for the perfect weather or nonono iam not breeding

Ahhh, so maybe he's just lazy

JK- I can only imagine your frustration, but I really admire you for being so patient with them.

I know Wuv swears by Amazon Rain when conditioning hers, so that might be worth a shot. Give them as rich a food as you can afford- I myself want to avoid live foods while in residence, but I'm aware when I'm going to breed them that it may come to that if they need a little extra kick in their diets, so you might want to look into cultures of some sort if you haven't already.

Best of luck with the rest period, and hopefully they'll come back raring to get down to it. :p

That . . . or maybe he just thinks he's too good for her . . . :look:

Week 2 (I've lost track of the day)

OKay, so I've been checking things off the to-make-him-bubble-list.

I've Shown him another male (which only succeeded in making the other male bubble nest  )

I've done a water change.

I've separated the male and female for a while.

I've released the female.

And I've been feeding often and live foods at that!

Finally, I am trying adding blackwater extract....I added it today so we'll see!

Final Decision: I am going to give it another 2 days and then I'm going to try a copper plakat male as the new mate after giving her a rest!

OKay Finally!!!!!!

We have a bubblenest!

What finally worked is stealing the semi-large bubblenest my turquoise VT Alpha made. (BTW--Alpha is almost done rebuilding what was left of the stolen nest! :p )

I put the stolen nest in two days ago and since then Allie (the hopefully to-be-father) has built upon it....not very much but beggars can't be choosers!

So today I released Exxon into the tank. I couldn't bear to watch, but I did see that nasty chunk taken out of her tail :-( Poor thing.

I'm going to watch them for a few days and see if anything happens!
