20gallon Journal - Updated Daily - Indir

With all due respect truck, I'd have personally said the "expert" you quote is missguided or poorly researched realy... You can easily get an 8 degree swing in the wild habitat of fish quite easily, and hence pretty much anywhere between 22 and 28c is fine for most trops, with 26 being good for all but a few exceptions, most notably discus that want 28+ centigrade... Neons don't want it cooler, they come from the same area as Discus, so prefur it mid-to-high range for temp :good: Discus are in pools rather than the main river though, so neons will melt at above 28, but cooler they perhapse aren't. Geo's round here do fine in pH 7.5 GH 8 and IME rams far better for me cooler... If you start digging arround, you'll probibly find most ram keepers do have things mid-range for temp usualy :nod:

All the best

Sorry for the confusion truck that was probably my fault. From research i did it says they are the same, damn the internet and its false information lol. So the Bolivian Rams would be okay in my tank then?

Thanks for the information rabbut. Im still looking around for more information but from the looks of things that ive found so far it will be fine to keep them all together which is good for me :)

Since the confusion ill have to ask again:
Can i get 4 for the 20 gallon? Or would a pair still be the maximum?
What are the chances the male and female will pair up if they are in their together as a pair?

Regards,
Indir

if you want them to pair up, buy 4 (2 females and 2 males) see if one pair pairs up then take two back, it is reccomended that you have a pair per 20 gallons

Well i am pretty eager on breeding them so i want them to pair up. Hmm as for taking them back, im not to sure on my LFS about that, how would i ask about this without making it obvious ill be bringing 2 back lol :p

Ok ended up buying too. They seem to be paired up. They are following eachother around all the time. I think i have male a female. Ill get pics up in a minute, they are uploading at this moment.

How can i be sure if they are paired up or not?
Also, Anyone able to identify which sex they are?

Pictures of Rams:
Male I believe:

P.S I will get my girlfriend to upload the photos we took on her camera, her camera quality is alot better then my phone one so it will make it easier to identify them :)

It's not uncommon for male bolivians to stick together when they are first introduced into a new environment. If they're both males you'll know it very shortly when they begin to form territories.

I have no idea how to sex them.

Really? The top fin doesnt have the 3 longer ones up the front.. I thought that was how to sex them :\ And the "female" is dull in colour while the other has solid colours that are easily visible :\

Anyone else able to sex them?

Will they do anything specific so that i know they are both males once they form territories?

Regards,
Indir

Depending on the Ram species, some have blue specled faces for males, and not for females. With others, it's a long pointed dorsal fin for male, rounded for female. I'm seeing no blue specles and long pointed fins on both. This surgests to me that they are both the same sex, one way or another. This said now, I can't remember if it's the dorsals you look at with this species, or the colours.

They are new and still settleing, so males likely won't be showing their colours yet anyway...

Dangit. Guess im going to have to go exchange one of them for a female. What should i be looking for to know she is a female?

Okay from the research ive done the best way to sex them is by there vents. This is the site that i found it on most recently (found it several times):
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/phpBB/viewtop...ighlight=sexing

I have come to the conclusion from this link (very helpful IMO) that i have a male and a female. The female being the one that is less colourful, the one i suggested was a female... Ive taken a close look and the "male" (colourful one) has a small slanted vent while the "female" (duller one) has a noticabely bigger non slanted vent... I can attempt a picture but it is to hard to get a picture of lol.

Also what is the best way to determine wether they are pairing up so that they will breed?

And, what is the best diet to feed them to give them better looking colours :)

Oh yeah, and anyone know any things to do to trigger spawning or should i leave them to it?

And water updates for 12 hours after last:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 10

12 Hours after above:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrites = 0
Nitrates = 0

Going to test once per 24 hours from now on. It is stable and i am diong water changes twice a week for about 15-20% each time as ive read need to keep water quality high for rams.

Hey everyone. Here is an update on water stats. Each are 24 hours apart:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 0
PH = 7.4

Has been that way since i added the fish and tested every 24 hours :)

Am i fully stocked or can i try to find some more fish?

Indir
