20gallon Journal - Updated Daily - Indir

Thanks Thommo, shes great to watch :D To bad i dont see Emilio (the male) to much lol.
Still waiting for the upload of videos to finish :\

Is it normal for her to be on the heater? I took her off just incase it was bad for her.

Regards,
Indir

EDIT: Thanks for reply thommo. Gonna try to see what im supposed to do or if mine even has guard on it. Dont want her to get cooked :eek:

cute BN's, no don't worry, they're smart enough to move off if it gets too warm!!!!

Thanks MW.

I love you too babe.

Is it normal for the BN to have purple looking poo? Its like an inch long now but shes back to hiding?

So i shouldnt worry about her being on the heater MW. She will get off whens she is to hot?

Regards,
Indir

EDIT: She has had poo that is longer then her as a strand, and has had a few of them now :S Is this normal for them to poo this much? Or shall i name her Miss Poo lol.

Ok heres a video of my female BN (yet to be named) eating some cucumber :p

Emilio doesnt like the camera to much lol. Soon as he sees it his outta there within a second :p

The danio video doesnt seem to be working so ill try to upload it tommorrow.

Got a few more questions:
The female BN is swimming around the glass alot :S and has been doing a poo for the past 30-40 minutes... It looks like a long hair strand with small clumps of purple/white about 5mm long, then a 5mm gap then 5mm long poo again and so on. Is this normal behaviour or should i be worried?

Also my danios are hanging around the bottom alot more now, the females look very fat and they are chasing eachotehr around a fair bit. Is this breeding type of behaviour? Oh and they are showing off one of their fins, i think the anal fin (one on the bottom lol), is this normal also?

Sorry for such big questions but im a bit paranoid lol.

Regards,
Indir

P.S Water stats are
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 10
Didnt test PH but i can if need be

Ok update on water stats for everyone:
Taken at about 6pm today:
Ammonia = 0
Nitrites = 0
Nitrates = 10 (Reduced from 40, by changing about 80% of the water with dechlorinated tap water before putting any fish in)

Thinking about getting a trio of Bolivian Rams/Butterflies. Gonna do some more research for now though.

Indir

before you go further;
tank temp?
tank inhabitants?

and rams dont work in trios stick to even numbers and follow this rule 1 pair per 20 gallons

and if you go for them get a male and a female

Ah 2 of them only i see. I was thinking about getting four of them lol. Was hoping u would pop in :D You seem very knowledgeable on Rams from what ive read on the other foru msections :)

My tank is usualy around 27. Was at 26 today because air con was on all day due to the good old heat of 43 celcius :\ it can sometimes get to 28 when the lights are on.

Tank inhabitants are:
8 leopard danios (3 male and 5 females) (About 5-6cm each)
2 BNs (male and female) (Both around 7cm atm)

Regards,
Indir

EDIT:
Also, is it normal for the male bristlenose to have better look golden markings over his body? The female ones dull compared to the male...

your danios will prefer cooler temperatures such as 24 degrees oC and so will the Bn's so i suggest you dont go for german blue rams as they need to be kept at 28 oC which your other fish wont like, so i suggest you turn your heater down to approx 24 degrees oC and go for cockatoo cichlids as they will do better at the lower temperatures which your other fish will appreciate, you could have a trio of cockatoo's 1 male and two females.

and if your not struck on cockatoos there are

Rio Madeira Apistogramma
Agassizi's Dwarf Cichlid
(both quite rare)

Cant find cockatoo cichlids around here sadly. Wierd from the sites ive looked at they say they will be fine in the temps my tank is, so im a bit confused now :S

Also, i have had my tank at 28 for a pretty long time and the danios and BNs were fine :S Ill have to do more research i guess...

Both my BN's are alot more active tonight :eek:

Only good center fish that i thought would do well in my tank were the Bolivian Rams so i was hoping they would be okay :( Damnit :(

Indir

german blues will be ok if you keep the tank at 28oC or you will get problems, but your other fish may not appreciate it.

.

!

Almost all the Mikrogeophagus ramirezi dumped into standard community tanks die within months. These fish MUST be kept in very warm conditions, around 28-30 C (82-86 F). Too cold, and their immune system and digestive system don't work properly, and sooner or later you have to deal with things like Hexamita.

Conversely, you cannot keep things like neons, danios or Corydoras this warm. They will hate you for it! Neons and danios prefer fairly cool water, around 22 C (72 F) while Corydoras mostly do best under 25 C (77 F). If they're too warm they will have a shorter lifespan and will be more prone to disease.

Over at Wet Web Media I have to explain these facts once or twice a week. It gets boring very quickly! Have you ever wondered why neons die so easily? Or why people can't keep their ram cichlids alive? Temperature is critically important, and yet too many aquarists don't think about this factor at all. Please spend some time reading about a fish before buying them.

I'll also make the point that Mikrogeophagus means "little earth-eater". These are sand-sifting cichlids. Gravel is not an option! Give these cichlids what they need: a sandy substrate tank with some floating plants for shade, a high temperature, gentle current, 0-20 mg/l (maximum) nitrate, and regular water changes. Super-soft water isn't essential, but it helps, and certainly don't keep them above 10 degrees dH, pH 7.0. Wild fish will be living in water with less than 5 degrees dH and pH 5-6. Don't do these things and they won't live that long. If you must add tankmates, choose fish from similar warm-water conditions, such as cardinals.

a lot of the info on the internet is wrong, people dont realise that rams come from a temp of around 28-30 in the wild and this is why they die in captivity if not kept at the right temperature

Hmm have you looked at the two links i gave you? This is why im a little hesitant on taking your word completely and not getting them for my tank heh :|
