19 Gallon Nano Diary - New Corals And Fish Etc

Yeah but I could not kill the shrimp unless I had no other option, I hear clicking but still cannot be positive that it's the shrimp as I have not seen the thing for months, with only algae to eat I cannot see how it's survived

So should I go with a largish filter to add to the water flow and have less base rock, or do I

go with the another powerhead and some base rock and cured Lr
But i think its better to go with all live rock

Yeah that was what I was thinking, because my LR has no real life as in bristleworms, all eaten by the crabs and mantis or died....

I have five pieces of LR how many more would you think I need....I remember the largest is about 4 pounds or a bit bigger and the other four pieces are about 6-9 pounds....so maybe two pieces about 3-4 pounds each?

It may be more expensive than I wanted but it might be more beneficial anyways

Try and get one big 7 to 10 lbs piece and build your existing on the new piece
thats what i did and look at it now

And here it is now

I have a piece like that which is about 4-5 pounds (can't remember the exact weight) it's a very long piece with lots of growth and the rest is now essentially base rock...So I think maybe a second big bit might be good, or a couple of smallish pieces...

I have $50, $28 for a powerhead, $5 for the RO water and probably $20 per 2 pounds of LR maybe just enough for a 2 pounds piece, a powerhead and a jug of RO

Just thinking isn't it actually better that you have a large piece of LR, that actually is light, as it's cheaper but bigger...

That piece wasnt fiji it is tonga rock. Fiji costs like 3.50 per lb. "Tonga is 7.00 per lb.What kind of powerhead. I find the koralia does better because it doesnt suck up any water. Smaller size for nanos too.

being In Australia we have some different brands my powerhead is aquaone does 500 litres per hour... and I don't know what type of LR I have

Doesnt really matter what type lr but its better than base rock. And aslong as you can get a power head with signficant flow it doesnt matter what type it is.

I bought a 1kg piece of LR, a few gallons of RO and a 500 litre per hour powerhead today for...$16 for the LR (been there since Thursday but much of the life seems 100% with no visible die off... $5 for the RO and $22.95 for the Powerhead... new pics up later :good:

Looks like you have a nice bit of brain coral there :)
and the others just lok like zoos and button polyps to me.
Its always best to buy live rock if you can afford it :) as for hitchhikkers.. I still have stuff apprearing in my tank 4 months after set up, no idea how it got there..lol The little critters take time to settle in and feel safe enough to come out, and alot will only come out when the lights have been off for a while and the room is quite dark.

Well last night my friend the mantis shrimp appeared....missing an arm!!!

I placed some brine shrimp in the tank to bring him out to see if it was him (my mum saw something) and it came out very pale and missing one of it's smashing arms (only one meral spot)

Could it be possible that the shrimp has eaten it's own arm to survive?? or is it a wound?

Oh and found out that it isn't aiptasia but a different polyp (it just folded in on itself it didn't shoot into the rock)

and some spionid worms and some snails whose name escapes me... oh and a weird red polyp thing :good:

Some nice coraline algae, almost a pastel green colour as popped up now since the tank got it's own lighting fixture but also RO, theres alot of purple and some brown I think diatom all over the LR now...

I found a couple of columbellid snails and foraminiferans

I am still amazed the Mantis is alive...and he doesn't like me, he "flares" at me when he see's me, Funny I see that it's survived this long I feel obligated to keep him alive due how much battling it's done and now with only one smashing arm

Will the arm grow back also?

A smaller arm will grow back with the next shed, then each time he sheds it will get a little bigger until its back to normal size. I had 2 in my tank for some time they are great fun to watch. I had mine ID ed by a matis guru on another forum as being a very small variety that would not harm anything, and true to form after 4 months all iw well in my tank with no critter deaths what so ever.
